Golf tournament
The Maldon Golf Club Annual Tournament takes place this coming weekend ... is expected to attract players from across the state and beyond. Club Secretary Bob Briggs says that up to 180 golfers from over 20 regional clubs will be represented. "Most district clubs try to support each other," he says. "They come to Maldon and have a day away."
Emma dons the green and gold
Kimberly Grabham. Emma Pocock, daughter of Bill and Debbie Pocock, is representing Australia. She will be competing at World Championship Multisport on August 25 in Townsville ... Emma's race consists of a three-kilometre ocean swim followed by 120-kilometre bike ride.
Ready for the next century
Rachel Hagan. August marks the 100-year anniversary of the Stansbury Golf Club, and the club is making sure everyone in Stansbury can join in and celebrate this huge milestone with them. Over the last century, the number of members has fluctuated but, no matter the struggles it has faced, the club has always survived.
The ’Burn takes Round One: Round Two coming up
Keep Punching. Welcome to the final NCFL home-and-away game for the 2024 season – Donald v. Wedderburn. The final four had come down to the last round. Donald was locked into the top four; Wedderburn needed to defeat Donald that day to secure its spot in the final four, while up north, Nullawil needed to defeat the Demons to stake its claim for the same spot in the four. There was great interest in both games indeed.
Local connection to Gold
We all cheered as the Australian men’s pursuit team cycled to a gold medal at the Paris Olympics ... What many of us didn’t realise is that the team is coached by Tim Decker, brother and brother-in-law to Donald’s Carolyn and Charles Wheeler.
Matthew creates history
Matthew Denny is Australia’s first male discus thrower to win a medal at the Olympics. Matthew is also the only Olympian to come from Allora.
Bulls and Demons share hockey honours
In the final match of hockey in the home-and-away season for both Birchip-Watchem and Wycheproof-Narraport, the Demons dominated in the senior games, while the Bulls took home the honours in the juniors. Two minkey games were played on Saturday with both clubs fielding enough for two full teams, albeit, from a younger cohort.
Gold medalist at Hodgson Vale equestrian centre
With everyone still on an Olympic high from Paris, the RM Equestrian Centre at Hodgson Vale has secured the services of Olympic Equestrian Gold Medalist Stuart Tinney for a series of workshops in September. Stuart Tinney is one of Australian’s foremost equestrians having achieved a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics as well as numerous other achievements in competitions all around the world.
Training Arabian horses for Arabia
"There's no point in taking coal to Newcastle" is an old saying that seems appropriate for what young Ramsay horse trainer Ben Hoey has accomplished as he regularly trains Australian bred Arabian horses for export to rich owners in Arabia. The Hoey family is well known on the Downs as expert horsemen across a variety of disciplines such as Polocrosse, Polo and Endurance Riding and Ben is continuing this proud tradition.
Raiders close, but no cigar
The Raiders travelled to Kerang for their round 16 match against the Blues, which was their second-to-last game in 2024 ... Kerang scored the opening goal of the match. Reagan Hamilton responded with the Raiders’ first goal while motivating the team by saying "Come on."
Hay kids take MCG centre stage
Jade Auldist. In a day they'll never forget, a group of lucky Auskick kids from Hay were given the opportunity of a lifetime, thanks to our dedicated Auskick coordinator, Leah Wythes. On Sunday, they stepped onto the turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to play at halftime during the sold-out AFL clash between Carlton and Hawthorn.
Nhill Bowling Club winter tournament
B.Close. The Nhill Bowling Club conducted the annual H. Tink Electrical Winter tournament last Saturday, boasting excellent entries from Wimmera clubs. Sixty bowlers enjoyed some much-anticipated sunshine and an afternoon of fellowship in this popular casual tournament format.
Our champ secures basketball bronze
Wilson McShane. Kadina’s Stephanie Talbot has cemented her status as an Olympic champion after helping the Australian women’s basketball team secure a bronze medal on Sunday. The Opals triumphed 85-81 over the sixth-ranked Belgium in front of a packed crowd in Paris.
Taylor turning pro
Wilson McShane. Corey Taylor, a young surfer from Marion Bay, is facing the unique challenge of balancing his ambitions with the isolation of his hometown on the Yorke Peninsula. At just 19, Taylor is striving to become South Australia’s sole professional surfer on the World Surf League Championship Tour, but the geographical and financial obstacles are significant.
God smiles on Demons’ last hurrah
In their last ever home game as the storied Wycheproof-Narraport Football Club, the bottom rung Demons fittingly torched their long term arch rivals, top of the table Birchip-Watchem. In front of a large returning group of supporters, who ventured from far and wide to witness the end of an incredible football club, Wycheproof-Narraport, with a fiercer desire for the ball, ran out winners by 12 points wildly exciting the home crowd parked around the “Green Mill”.
School sport Australia national champion
Allora swimmer Bailey Harm has returned from the School Sport Australia Games as a National Champion after winning the 16 years 100m Freestyle in a 52.63 second swim. Bailey dominated the blue ribbon event from start to finish.
I’ll be bunkered
Course Language. Last weekend saw one of the club’s “Board” events held in the Maurie Tranter Memorial Mixed. The winners for the fourth time were Colin “Pug” and Maree Cullen with 83=13 ½ – 69 ½ ... Last Friday saw a few more keen junior golfers turn up ...
Bronze for Patterson
Eleanor Patterson, Cohuna’s adopted Olympian, won bronze in the women’s high jump on Monday morning (our time) and with fellow high jumper Nicola Olyslagers, made Australian Olympic history. Patterson jumped a season best of 1.95m, placing equal third.
Our own gold medallist
On the other side of the world to all the action in France, Mount Rascal 17-year-old Lien Dekeyser has won a gold medal in Malaysia as part of the Australian Under 19 Women’s underwater hockey team. Lien, a year 12 student at Toowoomba Anglican School, plays for the Toowoomba Redclaws Underwater Hockey Club.
Finals fever arrives
Corryong departed the finals race at the hands of Tumbarumba in the 1st semi final on Saturday.The Roos were ruthless from the first bounce kicking six goals but to the Demons’ credit they showed spirit in the second quarter to match it with their more fancied opponents.
Local athletes doing Riverland proud in Paris
Riverland athletes have done their region and their country proud at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Rower Alex Hill, who hails from Loxton North and won a gold medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, again made the Olympic finals in the men’s fours event, with Australia finishing sixth ... Loxton's Zachery Schubert ... Former Waikerie resident Tom Wickham ...
Sambrook selected for Australia Youth
Last Friday, North Coast football sensation Logan Sambrook received the phone call every kid dreams of. It was the coach of the Australian Youth Team, 'The Joeys,' inviting Sambrook to join the national team on their PacificAus tour against the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Under-19 men's teams.
