Pongers set sights on records

It’s not every day you see a giant ping pong bat travelling along Great River Road but that was what many motorists saw last weekend as it made its way to Corryong. Locals won’t miss the new sight when they go past the Corryong Baptist Church - the world’s largest ping pong bat in the front yard - signifying the venue for the upcoming Ping Pong-a-Thon.

Jess Liddy. Sam Clayson is acing achievements off the court. The regional South Australia tennis coach, formerly of Wallaroo, has been selected to go on a Tennis Australia coaching tour around the US.

Inspiring young leaders

The trail blazing Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy has created a blueprint for other regions around South Australia. Talented athletes, including nine from the Naracoorte Lucindale area, are emerging as not only high performers in various sports, but as young leaders and role models for their peers and the community.

Donald’s long weekend of tennis

Over the long weekend, the Donald Lawn Tennis Club held its 70th Labour Day Tournament in some of the hottest weather conditions the tournament has experienced for many years. In what was a cool summer in the Mallee, heat wave was timed to perfection for the three-day weekend! Thankfully the pool was open at the end of day’s play for everyone to cool off.

Our day – We salute our local heroes

Local people and organisations were recognised for their community service at breakfast ceremonies in towns across the Towong Shire on Australia Day ... The joint Citizens of the Year are former Corryong pharmacists, Catherine and Stewart Ross, who have had a long involvement in community affairs ... Local cafè owner, Stuart Spratt, was presented with a Special Recognition award ... Community Group of the Year award went to the supporters and committee members of the Corryong & District Memorial Hall and the RSL Hall ...

Culture on Court

Last Friday, Tennis Victoria, Buldau Yioohgen (Anglicare’s Indigenous Youth Leadership Academy) and the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Community hosted Culture on Court in Castlemaine - an event that mixed culture with tennis plus plenty of fun in a culturally safe environment. Participants improved their tennis skills and experienced cultural activities.

Barkly juniors compete in Indigenous tennis carnival

Ten juniors from Canteen Creek and five from Arlparra travelled to Darwin last week for the third National Indigenous Tennis Carnival. The children were treated to an unforgettable experience, which included a first plane ride and a use of an escalator for some of the children.

Kerang tops tennis

Kendall Jennings. Over 340 players hit the Kerang Lawn Tennis courts for the year's major fundraising event. The 2022 Kerang Easter Carnival was held from Friday, April 15 to Monday, April 18. The numbers this year were slightly down from last year, with 2021 breaking all participation records due to COVID-19 restrictions easing.

Barellan sports legend honoured

Sports Australia Legend and former Barellan sports star Evonne Goolagong-Cawley AC MBE has been awarded the inaugural The Dawn Award ... “To win The Dawn Award is an incredible honour. I have been unwell, and this has been the ultimate cheer-up for me. To be the first recipient makes it even more special. Dawn is one of Australia’s greatest athletes and has been a source of inspiration throughout my life,” Evonne said.

Australian Open cups visit Koondrook

Kendall Jennings. Locals were blessed with a visit by the Australian Open singles trophies on Tuesday. The trophies, affectionally named ‘Daph and Norm’, were accompanied by Tennis Australia representatives celebrating 100 years of women’s tennis championships in 2022, and the Dungala Culture on Court tour, partnered by Anglicare Victoria.

Hitting Wall launched at Memorial Park Tennis Complex in Bordertown

Tennis SA has launched a striking art mural at Memorial Park Tennis Complex in Bordertown as part of a collaborative project with Tennis Australia which has seen the reimagining of hitting walls across the country, an initiative designed to increase community participation and engagement in tennis.

Tennis SA State League All Stars kick off 2021/22 Tennis SA State League season in style

The 2021/22 Tennis SA State League season has been officially launched by the Tennis SA State League All Stars on the Eyre Peninsula ... The state’s highest level competition visited regional South Australia for the first time, with eight Tennis SA State League players joining six local tennis players to create Team Red and Team Blue.

Hitting Wall art project nears completion at Memorial Park Tennis Complex in Bordertown

The hitting wall at Memorial Park Tennis Complex in Bordertown is undergoing a makeover as part of a nationwide Hitting Wall Project. The Hitting Wall Project, launched in collaboration with Tennis Australia, will see hitting walls revamped across the country as part of an initiative designed to increase community participation in tennis off the back of soaring participation in 2020/21.

Great asset for Barellan

The place where an Australian tennis legend was born, the Barellan Tennis Club courts, was renamed to honour the local Goolagong family in a moving ceremony on Saturday.
