300 competitors at Lockhart 2024 Annual Little Athletics Carnival

The sun shone brightly over the Lockhart Recreation Ground as over 300 competitors gathered for the highly anticipated annual Lockhart Little Athletics Carnival. At the start of the day, a short cake-cuttting ceremony was held by host club Lockhart to recognise the day as the 20th carnival held in the town.

Hicks plays 50th AFLW game

Jodie Hicks played her 50th AFLW game last Saturday night in the Richmond Tigers’ Dreamtime in Darwin clash against Essendon. It was a frantic final few minutes of the first AFLW Dreamtime match, which saw both sides score 6.6 (42) to post a full-time draw … Hicks was a first-round pick at the 2017 AFLW Draft and has not missed a game in the past three seasons.

National success for YP bowlers

Kadina Olympian recognised

Joanna Tucker. A vourt at the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre, Kadina, is now officially named in honour of local Olympian Stephanie Talbot ... Talbot, formerly of Kadina, said she had learned everything she knew from playing sport. "It means the world to be able to have the court named after me," Ms Talbot said.

Cricket off to a bright start

Perfect weather on Saturday welcomed cricketers to grounds throughout the Wimmera Mallee for the opening round of the 2024-’25 season ... Nic Baird led the way with 47, while Stuart Lang contributed 42 not out, David Lang 20, “fill-in” 19, and Brylie Cameron 8 not out.

Clifton Benchrest Shooting Club hosts interschool shoot

On the 11th of October, members of the Rimfire discipline in conjunction with Clifton State High School hosted an interschool shoot. The event saw 60 students from 9 different schools across both the Southern and Darling Downs competing for bragging rights.

Hill Climb buzz

Oh glorious springtime Saturday in October, the air around Mount Tarrengower filled with the sound of bees and pobblebonks and roaring, revving engines. It was the Historic Hill Climb on Saturday 19 October, so motor-heads from miles around converged at Butts Reserve to admire each other’s chassis and race up and down the hill, as has been the tradition since 1928.

Illegal trails claim: Call for Hallowell bike ban

Patricia Gill. Friends of Kooryanderup (Mt Hallowell) are calling for a ban on mountain biking on the 532ha A-Class reserve. The Friends have raised concerns as the Shire of Denmark is set to overhaul the Mt Hallowell Management Plan (2008). The Friends report having seen youngsters with shovels and rakes emerging from the Sheila Heritage Trail Park Reserve.

Denmark brothers win National Enduro bike title

Karis Aplin. Denmark brothers Jy and Jake Drummond became National Champions over the weekend at the Auscycling MTB Enduro National and Oceania Championships in Collie. The enduro racing format involves riders racing against the clock in a series of downhill stages, with the final results coming down to the millisecond.

Judd Chislett claims double victory in senior titles

Drew Chislett. In an exhilarating display of skill and determination, young motocross rider Judd Chislett has made headlines by clinching two titles in his first year competing in the Victorian Senior motocross titles. The 16-year-old talent achieved a clean sweep, dominating all four rounds of the Senior Victorian Titles (C Grade) held at Portland, Shepparton, Albury and the final round at Blue Rock near Moe.

One raft sank, and the pirates won as West of the Range Regatta makes a big splash

The first regatta in 30 years made a splash on the Clarence River ... The West of the Range Regatta had four pubs competing with handmade rafts. The rafters had to paddle from Dave Ross’s place up the Clarence River, pass under the bridge and land at Tabulam.

Sailing report

The Sailing Season officially started … and was scheduled to begin with the Alan Carson Memorial Commodore’s Cup ... the weather gods intervened. In the interest of safety the Race Officer of the Day declared racing abandoned ... The following weekend (12 October) there was a marked improvement in the weather conditions and 13 boats took to the water and racing was successfully completed.

It was an intense few hours of bowling when Corryong took on the Commercial Club bowlers on their home turf in Albury on Saturday in the opening round of the Ovens & Murray weekend pennant competition. The visitors got off to a good start but once the Commercial bowlers got into their rhythm on a faster somewhat quirky pitch it was a game of catch up for the Corryong teams.

YP welcomes women’s football
