The sun shone brightly over the Lockhart Recreation Ground as over 300 competitors gathered for the highly anticipated annual Lockhart Little Athletics Carnival.
At the start of the day, a short cake-cuttting ceremony was held by host club Lockhart to recognise the day as the 20th carnival held in the town.
In 2004, the first carnival with a limited number of events was held in conjunction with the Festival of Sport, which was organised by the Lions Club of Lockhart.
After two years as a Come and Try day, the Centre carried on alone with a complete offering of track and field.
From the crack of the starting gun to the final lap of the 400-metre run, the atmosphere was engaging.
Athletes of all ages showcased their talents in a thrilling day filled with speed, strength and sportsmanship.
The carnival, which featured events ranging from sprints and hurdles to long-distance races and field events, drew participants from 20 different clubs from all over the Riverina, as well as further afield, including Goulburn and even Essendon.
Twenty-two athletes from close-neighbours, the Narrandera Little Athletics Club, were pleased to be involved in the first carnival for the summer season of athletics.
Lockhart, had 34 of its 40 registered athletes attend the event.
Record-breaking performances
Special mention must be made of the performances by Niesha Whiteman (Narrandera) in 13 years 500 metre walk (1st) and javelin (also coming 1st).
From the Lockhart Club, brother and sister Leland (13 years) and Savannah Swift (16 years) enjoyed their first carnival, with consistent performances in all their events.
This year’s carnival saw several record-breaking performances, with standout athlete Sophie Leonard from West Wyalong shattering the previous 1500-metre run record for 12 girls with an impressive time of 5 46.78, cutting the record by 52 seconds.
The event not only celebrated athletic achievements but also fostered a strong sense of community.
Families and friends gathered to cheer on their loved ones, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere.
Members of the organising committee of the Lockhart Little Athletics Centre expressed their gratitude for the participation and enthusiasm shown by the competitors.
“We’re thrilled to see so many competitors and spectators here today. It’s a testament to the spirit of our community,” said carnival announcer James McLaurin.
During the day, it was delightful to see so many athletes proudly wearing the gold, silver or bronze medals awarded for their performances across the events.
As the sun set, the carnival came to an end with the final races, celebrating the dedication and hard work of all participants.
With such an enthusiastic turnout, organisers are already looking forward to next year’s event, which promises to be even bigger and better. For now, the spotlight shines on this year’s remarkable athletes, whose performances will be remembered for years to come.
