First 2 Star event for equestrian centre
The RM Equestrian Centre at Hodgson Vale conducted its first 2 Star One Day Event during the long weekend, attracting riders from a wide area ... Previously the venue has hosted only 1 Star Eventing. Organiser Jo Williams said the event drew 140 riders to Hodgson Vale.

In an effort to raise much needed funds, the Guy Fawkes Heritage Association is opening its doors at the Ebor Sports and Recreation Grounds for their 20th anniversary on Saturday 12 October ... The Open Day will commence at 10am and see activities such as camp oven cooking by Ranger Nick, who will also facilitate a hands-on damper making workshop for the kids. There will be market stalls, whip cracking, Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Challenge and conclude with a concert, featuring country music singer James Blundell.
Records tumble as teamsters pull out all stops at the Good Old Days Festival at Barellan
Records tumbled at the 2024 Good Old Days Festival as teamsters from around the nation brought out the biggest horse, camel and bullock teams ever seen in modern Australia. The teamsters also excelled themselves with creating a world first – four bullocks, two camels and two horses harnessed together and pulling a wagon.
NSW Fisheries Officers action over safety concerns
NSW Fisheries Officers have taken industrial action and are refusing to inspect commercial trawlers at night over safety concerns after several alleged violent incidents where they have been shot at, threatened with knives … The Public Service Association PSA which represents NSW Fisheries Officers said they are avoiding certain areas and individuals at the very time fears have emerged that crooks, poachers and organised criminals … have taken over the state’s rivers, oceans and estuaries and are now plundering valuable species like abalone and rock lobster.
Cohuna Carp Catch is back
The North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) Native Fish Recovery Program is hosting the popular event on Gunbower Creek at the Gateway Information Centre end of Garden Park on Sunday, October 27. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be heaps of prizes based on the size and number of carp caught, as well as water bug activities, colouring tents, turtle and native fish displays, and a free lunch.

“Royalty” races to mountain top
The Riordan King and Queen of Mount Wycheproof hold on to their titles for the second year in a row since the event’s resurrection from the eighties ... the world’s smallest mountain roared to life with anticipation and support of the unusual, yet gruelling race, where runners carry bags of Mallee’s finest wheat 1km to the summit of Mount Wycheproof, as quickly as they can, competing for a whopping $5,000 prize.
Birchip Rifle Club on target
Rifle Clubs from St. Arnaud, Birchip and Robinvale/ Swan Hill competed for the Salvitis Challenge Trophy ... Rifle clubs in north west Victoria have competed for this trophy since 1902, when it was presented by the veterinary supply company Salvitis Pty Ltd.

Man illegally sold recreationally caught rock lobster
A Quinns Rocks man has had his fishing licence suspended and has been prohibited from being on any recreational fishing boat or possessing recreationally caught rock lobster for six months. When the 58-year-old man appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court he was ordered to pay fines, penalties and costs totalling more than $19,000.
Vale Jack Duggan – Wattles legend extraordinaire
Glyn Rees. As many will be aware on Tuesday last week, so very sadly the Wattles fraternity, senior and junior, lost one of their great stalwarts in Mr Jack Duggan. It will certainly be an adjustment for all who frequent Platz Oval at game time, senior and junior, to now see a vacant chair near the gateway aside the announcing box, a chair that in recent years has seen Jack, beside wife Shelley, as near permanent viewers of the achievements of all those on field in green and gold.
Bernie among Masters best
Bernie McLoughlan, formerly of Wooroonook, has recently returned from representing Australia in the 2024 World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. The brother of Wooroonook farmers Jeff and Leo McLoughlan, Bernie won a silver medal in the 6000m Cross Country team event with two other Australian runners in the M70-74 Age Group.
Bowls season opens
With a fresh coat of paint, the Maldon Bowls Club was looking spick and span last Sunday to celebrate the opening of the Pennant season. Bendigo West Member Maree Edwards was invited to send down the first ball, the Castlemaine Bowls Club was invited to enjoy a day of friendly competition and everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch.
Pint and a parmi for Denmark’s life saving World Champion
Serena Kirby. Anthony McEwan has won gold at the recent Life Saving World Championships making him world champion in the male masters 2km beach run. Held on the Gold Coast, Anthony, 55, competed against 40 other runners from all over the world in the 55-59 category.
Bunyan wins BayWa Open
Winner of the 2024 BayWa Hay Men’s Open Championship was Ian Bunyan with a gross score of 79. Runner-up was Peter Bisset with a gross score of 80. In B Grade Dane Doyle won with a gross score of 85 from Mark Pritchard with a gross score of 87.
ABC TV’s “Muster Dog” dog breeder wins the Yanac Yard Dog Trials
After a wild and cold week making setting up for the 29th Yanac Yard Dog Trial very difficult, last Saturday’s weather wasn’t as bad as forecast. With a few light showers and moderate wind, the event started at 7.30am with an egg and bacon breakfast and the Judges talk for the novice.
