– Lord Howe Island Board News November 2025
The Lord Howe Island Board was pleased to welcome crew members from the Royal Australian Navy’s flagship vessel, HMAS Canberra, during their recent visit to the Island on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 November.
On Tuesday morning, Navy personnel came ashore and joined community members at the Lord Howe Island Museum. Captain David McPherson led an informal Q&A session at 10:30am, sharing insights into the vessel’s operations and life at sea.
During the visit, Captain McPherson presented a commemorative plaque to the Island on behalf of HMAS Canberra.
The following day, students and families from Lord Howe Island Central School were welcomed aboard the ship for a guided tour — a rare opportunity to experience the workings of a Navy vessel up close.
Throughout the two-day visit, Navy personnel spent time on the Island and were warmly received by the community.
Their support for local shops, cafés and services was appreciated.
A special mention goes to Riley Wilson, a Lord Howe Island local currently serving aboard Canberra.
The Board thanks all those who contributed to the success of the visit — including biosecurity staff, local businesses, school staff and community members.
We value this positive connection with the Royal Australian Navy and look forward to future visits.
