Recent stories

Shane Presley has joined the 2024 Youth Round Table, which has started meeting to tackle issues facing young Territorians.

Shane is a young Aboriginal Walpiri from Tennant Creek who is studying a Certificate III in sports and recreation.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Shane is a Community Coach at John Moriarty Football, highlighting his commitment to community engagement and sports leadership.

Shane, a dedicated member of the Barkly Youth Advisory Group, is driven by his aspiration to enhance access to mentored employment pathways for fellow young Aboriginal Territorians.

His passion for fostering a secure environment and his aspiration to establish safe after hours activities for the youth instil a sense of hope and optimism.

His presence on the Round Table provides a valuable platform for raising concerns and presenting innovative ideas to improve outcomes for young people in his community.

The Youth Round Table, representing Tennant Creek Alice Springs, Darwin, Palmerston, East Arnhem, and the Big Rivers region, is a significant platform.

Each member, including Shane, will lead a community-based project throughout their 12-month term, highlighting the relevance of this initiative to the community.

Minister for Youth, Seniors and Equality Ngaree Ah Kit recently met with the 18-strong Round Table.

“It was a privilege to meet members of the 2024 NT Youth Round Table, and to hear about what has inspired them to amplify youth voices and improve outcomes for their peers,” she said.

“The Territory Labor Government knows it is important to listen to our young people so we can ensure our future policies, programs, and services remain contemporary, relevant, accessible, and inclusive.

“As a former member of the NT Youth Round Table, I know how valuable it is to be able to advocate for youth, and develop leadership skills that establish members as future leaders.

“I’m looking forward to following the progress of the members throughout the year and working with them to build a brighter future.”
