Biosecurity update

Recent stories

Following the detection of a rodent on the MV Island Trader on 8th September, the ship was placed into quarantine for 7 days. This unfortunately meant that it missed the tide window and caused a 14-day delay to freight transport at the beginning of the tourist season. Many businesses and some residents made the decision to fly their perishables in.

LHIB had reached out to the RAAF on the 9th of September and on Monday 19th , September, following a weather delay the RAAF was able to deliver remaining perishables, gas and flour. We thank the RAAF for their continued assistance and cooperation as we work with Birdon to ensure the best possible outcomes for the community whilst maintaining appropriate biosecurity for the Island.

LHIB understands the impacts that the event had on businesses and residents. The funding announced by the NSW government is aimed at improved biosecurity measures, particularly at departure points, which is our best defence against biosecurity risks and the protection of past investment. Once implemented, it should also reduce the risk of biosecurity events like the one just experienced.

Our newest recruit, Willow, is underway with her training. She visited the children of the LHI Central School on Wednesday, 21st September. Tim and Willow showcased some of the new skills she has been learning. The children were also educated on rodent detection devices and the LHI Phasmid.
