Tasmanian eventing club gets full stars for effort

A two-star eventing class has been run for the first time in Tasmania since 2015. It came about as a result of a successful campaign by some promising young event riders on the Victorian circuit in May/June last year, when several riders qualified at two-star level.

Emergency service equestrians gather for annual games

When you think of emergency services, the average person thinks of police, fire and ambulance, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. At least 20 organisations qualify for the title and make up those eligible to compete across 45 sporting disciplines at Police and Emergency Services Games held annually across Australia.

Easter Hole-in-One

Bob Briggs. Participation in this year’s Hole-in-One had been eagerly awaited by many golfers as a major event within Maldon’s Easter Fair Program. Many visitors to Maldon during the Easter period are regular competitors and great supporters of this very enjoyable activity at the Maldon Golf Club.

Rain and cold didn’t deter fans from the pull of Quamby

Despite the rain and arctic conditions, Tractor Pull enthusiasts headed to the birthplace of Tractor Pulling in Australia, Quambatook, for the Annual Easter Tractor Pull. With two lanes available at Quambatook, a mini sled was held on one side for smaller vehicles, while the other hosted the executioner sled for the larger vehicles.

Brilliant Barkly boys shine in U12 footy championships

Pam Dillon. A team of 15 boys from four different schools across the Barkly ventured up to Darwin to compete in the 12 Years and Under School of Sport Education NT Australian Football Championships. Team officials Tyler Horwood and Lachlan Dunemann coached and managed the boys through the three-day championships.

Inlet fishery opportunity

Wilson Inlet could become a thriving commercial fishery for rock oysters and mussels given the correct salinity levels, says aquaculturalist Zak Launay. The sustainable product feeds on phytoplankton and has the capacity to contribute greatly to the local economy, creating jobs and local fresh seafood.

National Champs

It has been a whirlwind ride to the top for former Cohuna lad, Jamie Harrison. The 22-year-old competed in the Australian Track & Field Championships in Brisbane at the weekend making it through to the finals of the 800m event ... Jamie has advice for Cohuna and district youngsters who are keen on athletics.

Allora Swimming Club Championships

The annual Club championship provided an action-packed day with 25 records broken and 5 new records created. Bailey Harm had an exceptional day breaking the record in all 10 events in which he competed ... It was an action-packed day in the pool enjoyed immensely by both swimmers and spectators.

Special pony gets family through the toughest of times

Lachie Allen is just four and his big sister Milla is six. When Mila led Lachie to a win on the little white pony Pixie at the recent Equestrian Festival at Warragul, there was hardly a dry eye in the house ... “On the day Milla kept saying how proud of Lachie she was and kept reminding him to sit straight like a soldier, point his toes to the stars and look up."

I am deep into Wild Ride, The story of the Australian Stock Saddle by Fiona Carruthers and have no hesitation in recommending that horse lovers or anyone interested in Australian history should go out and buy a copy today. Calling it magnificent doesn’t even come close.

Brothers win Dash for Cash

Congratulations to brothers Grant and Luke Robins who competed on Friday evening in the ‘Dash for Cash’ and won their class (30HP Standards) in the Riverland Dinghy Club Inc. Championship Series which includes multiple races in Renmark throughout the year ... Luke and Grant came in third in their category.

Pony Club eventers from all over Tasmania headed to the Tasmanian Equestrian Centre at Lauderdale recently for the Pony Club Tasmania State Trials. The event was hosted by the Southern Zone of Pony Club Tasmania with 94 riders competing on 110 horses.

Open win for 18yo a highlight of her campdrafting career

Campdrafting as a sport evolved naturally from young station hands competing around cattle yards and drovers' camps in NSW and Queensland in the 1880s. It’s generally been a sport dominated by men, but at Lockington in Northern Victoria earlier this month, the women took their fair share of the prizes.

Family fishing day makes a comeback

The Tennant Creek Fishing Club’s annual Family Fun Fishing Day made a comeback at Lake Mary Ann last weekend. The weather co-operated wonderfully, with little wind, warm and sunny as around ninety people came out to the lake to discover the joys of fishing.

All fired up after 43 years

After a 43-year hiatus, the 209 team of the Leitchville Fire Brigade has fired up again. Sporting shirts in the original team colours, the team entered its first competition after just six weeks of training.

Dancer turns it on at top level

On the weekend, Sarah Jarvis was awarded first place in the 17 Years Open Reserve Graceful Calisthenics Solo competition at George Jenkins Theatre in Frankston ... Calisthenics is a form of strength training consisting of a variety of movements and participants have to perform a set of exercises in competition.

Imagine this: One cricket match was played, each team faced just 20 overs, 36 sixes and 41 fours were scored, the game finished in a draw at 259 runs apiece, and the royal Children’s Hospital will benefit by almost $50,000.

Illegal marron fishers busted in the Moore River

Last month Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development compliance officers conducted a joint operation with Lancelin Police to apprehend people fishing for marron in the Moore River ... The fishers were busted with more than 30 pieces of fishing gear and were fishing out of season, which makes any marron fishing activity illegal.
