The Sunshine Coast citizen science program is growing, and council is calling on our community for their ideas. Citizen science is when people volunteer their time to partner with researchers to increase scientific knowledge and collect data about their natural environment.
E-transport plan for Denmark
A move to establish an electric car community cooperative has been mooted for Denmark. Local resident John Croft says four electric cars could easily meet the total transport needs of 12 families. And equipping each family with a folding electric bicycle would give access to a vehicle wherever it was parked with transport and health benefits for those shorter trips.

Patricia Gill. Denmark's ï¬rst St Ayles Skiff headed through the channel at the Rivermouth on Saturday marking the end of the 10-month community project to build the boat. Organiser David Cliff reflected on the project, quoting Ratty telling Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s classic children’s novel, Wind in the Willows: “Believe me my young friend there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much fun as simply messing about in boats”.
Council to apply to join NRJO
Rodney Stevens. Clarence Valley Council will reapply to join the region’s peak local government body, the Northern Rivers Joint Organisation ... Joint Organisations have legal powers to enable councils to work together at a regional level and with state agencies and other organisations to achieve better planning, economic development, and service delivery outcomes in regional NSW ... Currently the Northern Rivers Joint Organisation NRJO has the Ballina, Byron, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed NSW local government areas as full members.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a grassroots community group or a land manager wanting to roll out a landcare project on private property, how you put that project together is essential if you want to get funding, engage other people and ensure outcomes on the ground. Following the success of its workshop in Clifton last week, Condamine Catchment Management Association (CCMA) will be holding another free workshop at the Harvest New Life Church Hall in Pittsworth on Wednesday, 16 November.

Casino’s largest business has plenty to celebrate. The Casino Food Co-op is the winner of the Northern Rivers 2022 Regional Business of the Year ... The win for the Co-op wasn’t only about the meat industry. Earlier this month, the Coâ€op launched a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.

ACALS has opened in Casino in a prominent position near the roundabout at Centre and Barker streets. ACALS stands for Accessible Care and Lifestyle Services. The Casino office has 10 staff who help people in all kinds of situations.
Emergency Expo success
Last Saturday’s Castlemaine Emergency Expo at Castlemaine’s Camp Reserve was a runaway success, with over 30 organisations on the ground giving information and advice on how best to prepare for an emergency. It was a family day out, with many children enjoying the chance to enjoy a range of activities on offer - as well as the opportunity to get up close and personal with big trucks and men and women in interesting uniforms.
David Littleproud on regional listening tour
The Nationals leader and member for Maranoa David Littleproud has launched a national regional listening tour to listen and learn from regional voters, particularly those who left the party at this year’s election. Mr Littleproud said the party had to be honest about the election result and he genuinely wanted to hear from regional locals, particularly female voters and those who felt disillusioned before the federal election.
Community marches to end family violence
It was a great turnout to the Family Violence March on Wednesday, with local residents, community groups, police and service providers taking part to show their stance against violence in the community. Senator Jacinta Nampijimpa Price and Minister for Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Kate Worden were also in attendance to support the message of NO MORE!
Henty worth $100 million to economy
After a two-year hiatus the national economy benefited from a $100 million injection from the biggest and most successful Henty Machinery Field Days on record ... Held on September 20-22, the 59th annual field days featured 14km of outdoor shop fronts from over 800 exhibitors on over 1200 sites.

Winning writers announced
One of the hardest but most pleasurable jobs in the Clarence Valley is judging The Long Way Home writing competition – that’s according to the judges. But the verdict is in. The Long Way Home’s Claire Aman said the theme this year was ‘let go,’ prompting writers of all ages to come up with a fabulous bunch of stories – poignant, hopeful, quirky.
Friends of Lord Howe Island
The Friends of Lord Howe Island ran their 93rd weeding ecotour 20 to 27 August. Twenty-two people came from Sydney, Brisbane and Victoria to participate. On this trip, the Friends again assisted the Lord Howe Island Board weed team with projects. One was a visit to Blackburn Island to plant out more small trees as part of the revegetation program there.
Barellan CWA centenary celebrations
Country Women’s Association members from all over NSW and parts of Victoria joined members from surrounding groups for the Barellan CWA centenary celebrations last week. One very active 90 year old member and her husband travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland to attend ... A beautifully decorated birthday cake was cut by life members Reta Spencer and Val Hawker and served later as sweets.
Farewell to Maldon’s Australia Day celebrations
The Tarrangower Australia Day Committee has made the difficult decision to disband. In recent years, committee numbers have been dwindling, and efforts to recruit new members have had little or no results. The three remaining members have made the difficult decision to cease operations.
Old workshop now producing new works of art
Serena Kirby. The Denmark Art Club has breathed new life into the old Murphy’s workshop since it opened for classes earlier this year. Bought by art teacher Kendel Lynam, and her husband Nick in 2020, the once dilapidated shed has undergone a major transformation and created an artistic hub for young and old students.
Much-anticipated Barunga Festival back this month: Kirby
The Territory’s iconic Barunga Festival is set to take place from 12-14 August, with thousands of attendees from across the Territory and Australia set to descend upon the remote community for the three-day cultural extravaganza.
Maldon’s Little Library
On the corner of Allans Road and High Street is a little library that is crammed full of books waiting to be read. It’s the brainchild of local residents Doug and Glenda, who created it just before the pandemic arrived. During Covid, when the Athenaeum Library and the Castlemaine Library were closed, Doug’s and Glenda’s library was many a reader’s salvation.
