Whyalla City Council, Media Release, 13 May 2025

Get ready to dive into the excitement – the Australian Giant Cuttlefish will arrive soon in the coastal waters near Stony Point, marking the start of Whyalla’s much-loved Cuttlefest 2025 celebrations!

Running from June through July, the season features an exciting line-up of family-friendly, adventurous, and creative events taking place across the city.

Mayor Phill Stone said the annual migration of the cuttlefish is a natural wonder, and council is proud to support a festival that celebrates this phenomenon.

“The arrival of the cuttlefish is globally significant, and we’re thrilled to offer an extensive program to help our community and visitors enjoy and learn about this unique spectacle,” Mayor Stone said.

Cuttlefest has many local businesses and organisations sponsoring and hosting a wide variety of events. Whether diving into the water or celebrating on land, there are plenty of cuttlefish-themed activities to enjoy.

Mayor Stone said he’s particularly looking forward to the Salty ‘Sea’esta, returning to Ada Ryan Gardens on Saturday, 7 June, with a special Sunday activation also taking place over the long weekend.

“The Salty ‘Sea’esta is a great event for the community, with free entertainment on the mainstage and around the gardens, roving performers, marine-themed kids’ activities, markets, food trucks and more,” he said.

“A big thank you to Des’s Cabs, who are providing a free bus service to and from the event – making it even easier to join the fun.”

Events start this month, so now’s the time to get planning, with a host of events available to peruse and book ahead: LINK. The program will be continually updated throughout Cuttlefest, so be sure to check back regularly and follow council’s social media channels for updates and event announcements.
