Cattle ticks found on property next to showground prompts committee to cancel show

Recent stories

Cattle ticks have been found on cattle at a property next to the Bonalbo Showground.

It was during a routine inspection of the cattle that the ticks were discovered and the relevant authorities notified the managers of the showground.

Cattle ticks are considered to be a serious external parasite of cattle in Australia and can carry the disease tick fever, which can kill cattle and has the potential to cause significant economic damage to the beef cattle and dairy industries.

Controlling and eradicating cattle ticks is important to the viability of the cattle industry and there are strict controls for the movement of stock from infected and adjoining holdings.

The Bonalbo Show Committee said while there are ways that would allow for livestock and equine events to be held at the showground, there are costs and complexities involved, and there remains an element of risk.

The cattle ticks that have been found are showing signs of resistance to current control practices.

Given Bonalbo Show is six weeks away, the show committee decided it is the best interests of exhibitors, donors and the local cattle industry to cancel this year’s show.

As the control program progresses the committee will consider the possibility of holding a separate event depending on the circumstances and in consultation with the Department of Primary Industries.

This information was provided by the Bonalbo Show Committee.
