The NSW Government changes to the Shark Management Program include the removal of shark nets on beaches from 31 March 2025.
The timing of the removal of nets to avoid the peak of turtle migration has been communicated to Surf Life Saving Clubs and the public through the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and coastal councils.
SLSNSW has and will continue to play a significant role in the NSW Government’s Shark Management Program. SLSNSW provides drone surveillance services at 50 sites across the NSW coastline during key times of the year. This program is the largest coastal surveillance program delivered by drones in the southern hemisphere.
More recently SLSNSW has been working with DPI to trial long-range drones that can operate across broader expanses of coastline to provide cost effective aerial coverage to further support the preventative measures in place for the community under the Shark Management Program.
Along with volunteer and lifeguard patrols operating until 27 April, additional roving patrols using Surf Rescue jetskis will continue along stretches of the NSW coastline for the remainder of the season to respond to hazards and incidents.
SLSNSW recommends the public downloads the free SharkSmart app to receive real time alerts for SMART drumline target shark capture/releases, tagged shark detections, SLSNSW drone shark sightings, and other shark related information.
SLSNSW supports the measures the NSW Government has put in place for the Shark Management Program in NSW.
