Shields awarded life membership

Recent stories

The Kerang Turf Club held its AutoPro Summer Races on the last Saturday of 2024. The eight-race card attracted trainers from across the state. However, the day’s highlight was not the races but the awarding of a Kerang Turf Club Life Membership to Alan Shields. Alan has volunteered at the club for 20 years (2002-2024). He served as Vice President for three years and then became the club President for four years before resigning from the committee in 2018 to travel and see more of Australia. Even after stepping down, Alan never genuinely retired from the club; he can often be seen maintaining the grounds—mowing the lawn, whipper-snipping the surrounds, planting trees, and even cleaning the free RV toilet block. Alan is a profoundly community-minded person who has always advocated for the Gannawarra Shire community.

On the track, the Kerang Circuit began with a track rating of Good Four, which was upgraded to a Good Three after the third race. Mitchell Freedman had a successful day, winning the first three races with ‘Baltic Way,’ ‘Seattle Hope,’ and ‘Seacryption,’ and finishing second in the fourth race with ‘Sweet City Dancer.’ Anthony Cosgriff secured victory in the fifth race with ‘Attaboom,’ while Barry Goodwin won the sixth with ‘Donation.’ Craig Weeding’s horse, ‘Heavenly Prophet,’ won race seven, and Danielle Chapman claimed victory in the AutoPro Kerang feature race with ‘Snappy Tycoon.’ Gerald Egan rounded the day by winning race eight with ‘Overloaded.’

Former local jockey Logan McNeil had a busy day as well, riding ‘Tyaak’ to a fifth-place finish in race two, ‘Koyunga Breeze’ to seventh in race three, ‘Breakless’ to seventh in race four, ‘Timbolton’ to eighth in race five, and ‘Bourbon Road’ to eighth in race seven.

The Kerang Turf Club hosts jump-out meetings throughout the year, with two race meetings held at Easter and on the last Saturday of the year.
