Ranger Nick, Media Release, 11 July 2024
The six team members who won the Guinness World Records crown for the Longest Damper are reuniting in Charleville on July 13 for the 5-year anniversary since the epic event.
Crowned ‘officially amazing’ by the Guinness World Records, Ranger Nick, Greg Purvis, Leannda Dierke, Steve Hockam, Adnun and Albab Khan claimed the title on July 13, 2019, for creating a 153.002 metre damper.
The world-record title was originally won by Charleville in 1994 with a 75-metre damper, before being trumped by Sweden with a 125 metre long damper in 2006.
In 2019, they brought the title back home to Charleville.
The six team members from NSW and Queensland were joined by about 250 hands-on helpers to create the iconic Australian bread in Central Queensland.
Five years later, the team is going down memory lane for a flashback of their success, meeting again at the Charleville Fishing and Restocking Club to reflect, catch up over a coldie and enjoy a scrumptious camp oven dinner prepared by now multi-award winning Ranger Nick.
“The event five years ago was epic”, Ranger Nick said.
“Certainly a huge buzz and highlight of my career. The preparation leading up to the record attempt was enormous and with so many helping hands on the big day, the Australian spirit and patriotism was at its peak. It’s going to be a small reunion this year, just sitting around the campfire and spinning some yarns, however we have some big plans to put Charleville more on the map.”
Charleville Mayor Annie Liston said she was looking forward to the camp oven meal and a slice of damper at the reunion.
Inspired by the 2019 event, Ranger Nick published his third book ‘A World of Dampers – 101 damper recipes’ not long after. It has been a bestseller online and at his public appearances ever since.
His previous two books Boy from the Bush series: You Should be Walking with Me when I’m Walking by Myself and Soul Food for the Non Carnivorous Biped are into their fifth print run.
He also has another book out, called Radio Recipe Collection, and his own brand of merchandise.
