Moving ANZAC Day service

Recent stories

A moving Anzac Day dawn service was held in Naracoorte to remember fallen soldiers and service people on April 26.

Mayor Patrick Ross described the service as “amazing”.

“This being my first Naracoorte service, I was in anticipation of a great community event. I was not disappointed, the weather was cool and crisp without wind, which made for the slowly emerging dawn to filter over the massive crowd that had arrived early to commemorate Australia’s entrance into World War I and remember the sacrifice and ongoing service of those who choose to protect us and this great country with their unselfish service,” Mr Ross said.

He said it was not lost on all those present that on this ANZAC Day, our entire community was involved in its presentation.

“We had all the schools delivering either prayers or songs, the wreath laying included our migrant community laying a wreath, which is significant as many have been forced to leave their country of birth and their recognition of the ADF effort in providing a measure of stability for many years.

“I rather enjoyed the recital of “The Raw Boys” by a KIWI veteran, and this was followed by a beautiful rendition of “God Defend New Zealand” in Māori.

“The Haka followed the war cry of the Kiwi Warrior prior to battle.

“It was great that our brothers from across the ditch were happy to share this, as we are ANZAC’s after all “Lest we Forget”.

Mr Ross said the continued support of the small brigade of “Light Horsemen and Women” in full regalia is always special, along with our nurses in period uniforms, which added a real sense of time and remembrance on this special occasion.

“Congratulations to everyone who went to either Naracoorte or Lucindale services, which were once again strongly supported.”
