Firefighter on US rescue mission

Joanna Tucker. Kadina CFS volunteer Justin Baxter is flying to the US this week to help fight some of the 85 wildfires burning across the country, following an SOS call put out by officials. The Moonta Bay resident ... is scheduled to reach the state of Idaho ... to start his mission, along with eight more South Australians and a host of other Australian firefighters ... Mr Baxter said he had undergone an intensive training program to be ready for the 40-day deployment.

Tourism cruises in

Sarah Herrmann. More regular cruise ships are set to return to Yorke Peninsula waters this year, with hopes high that passenger numbers can eventually reach those of pre-pandemic levels. Travellers from three Coral Adventurer ships, which carry a maximum of 120 passengers each, are expected to be "tendered in" to Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park as part of a "wild islands of South Australia" itinerary — meaning the ships anchor offshore and passengers are brought in on smaller boats.

The need for aged housing in Gingin remains

In the past six months the shire has controversially spent more than $700,000 for land on Dewar Rd for a future recreational use while the amount of housing available for seniors remains at the same level it was in 2015.

Cars didn’t stop tooting as they drove slowly by the nurses, midwives and other hospital staff protesting outside Lismore Base Hospital ... The rally was to highlight the need for a 15 per cent pay increase nurses say they deserve and for better conditions.

National Tree Day at Narrandera Wetlands brings volunteers out in force

Narrandera Landcare had a great turnout of people wanting to help on Sunday for its National Tree Day community planting. Thirty-five volunteers helped put around 800 seedlings into the ground to replace some of the vegetation lost in the last floods.

Located at the former junior school campus in Corryong the hub has played a significant role in responding to the recovery and the building of community strength after the 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires.

Hugh Schuitemaker. A Senior Riverland politician says the State Government needs increased preparation against potential bird flu outbreaks in South Australia. Riverland-based MLC, and opposition spokesperson for regional SA, Nicola Centofanti has claimed documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request revealed "no official correspondence" between Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven and the state’s chief veterinary officer (CVO) regarding the threat of H7 HPAI bird flu between May and July.

Kaniva lights up with new film campaign

It was lights, camera, action in Kaniva as filmmaker Chris Hilder of Cholly Media visited Kaniva to produce short film clips for the Kaniva and District Progress Association (KDPA). With the closure of Out and About tourism magazine, KDPA sought fresh ways to highlight Kaniva’s attractions and tourism operators. Collaborating with KDPA’s Helen Hobbs, Chris came up with an innovative concept to expand their "Eat, Stay, Play" campaign.
