Truck petition en route to Parliament

Recent stories

The Maldon Heavy Traffic Petition commenced a new leg of its journey to Parliament last week, when members of the Maldon Traffic Group (MTG) presented the document to the Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards. The petition, which requests a comprehensive State Government review into the nature and level of heavy vehicle traffic through Maldon, was prompted by concerns for pedestrian and driver safety; noise; ageing roads and building infrastructure and the potential for heavy truck traffic to detract from the attractiveness and heritage character of the town.

MTG member Rosalie Hastwell emphasised that the group is particularly focused on through traffic. “Truck transport is a vital part of local industry and the town’s liveability,” she said. “At the same time, many have voiced their concerns about the high level of heavy traffic which is simply moving through the town on its way to other destinations.”

The petition, launched in early July, gained the attention of many local residents and the result was a final tally of 801 signatures. “From long-standing residents to newer residents, from businesses to visitors, people have mostly been very supportive,” Ms Hastwell said.

The group handed the Maldon Heavy Traffic Petition to Ms Edwards at her electorate office in Kangaroo Flat and discussed the next steps for the document, which will be tabled at the next sitting of the Legislative Assembly. Ms Edwards will also personally hand a copy to Minister for Roads and Safety Melissa Horne.

The Maldon Traffic Group, which has brought together residents, business interests and representatives of local heritage groups, will now focus on how improvements can be made in the short term to a range of local traffic safety issues.
