This Volunteer’s Week, visitors to the Kaniva Wetlands and Fauna Park may notice a new addition to the flock: a sheep named Amb-ewe-lance, or Lance for short! Lance is here to promote a crucial message about first aid and community safety.
Lance has his hooves crossed for no accidents as he stands next to his pal from the Hockey Club near the bird aviary! Lance proudly wears the protective uniform with the essential equipment and tools needed by our ACOs (Ambulance Community Officer).
Lance has been created by Kaniva members Monica, Debbie, Robyn, Rachel, and Anna, and draws attention to the essential services provided by our volunteer ambulance officers.
In conjunction with Volunteers Week, we extend a big thank you to these incredible individuals whose commitment keeps our community safe.
Their work is especially crucial in Kaniva, being both a rural setting and busy highway location, where immediate medical response is critical.
There are several ways you can support our volunteer ambulance team: Learn First Aid and CPR: Courses are available through Link Neighbourhood House.
Lance encourages everyone to equip their cars, tractors, utes, homes and workshops with first aid kits.
Download the GoodSAM App: This app connects first aid responders with emergency situations, integrating with ambulance services to provide immediate assistance before professional help arrives.
Become an ACO: ACOs and Community Emergency Response Teams provide critical early intervention and patient care in rural communities.
Volunteering as an ACO is a big commitment, but it not only offers excellent training and a potential career path as a paramedic, it also represents a meaningful way to give back to the community.
This Volunteers Week, let’s celebrate Lance’s important message and the invaluable contributions of our volunteer ambulance officers.
Their dedication and hard work make a significant difference in our rural community, ensuring that help is always close at hand.
And did you know that the Kaniva Ambulance Shed itself was also built by volunteers? For more information on first aid courses or becoming a volunteer, visit Link Neighbourhood House or apply online by visiting Ambulance Victoria.
Thank you to all our volunteers – your efforts save lives!
