Community spirit on show for NAIDOC Week

Tennant Creek has celebrated NAIDOC Week with a range of community events.

Despite some inclement weather, the festivities kicked off with a Community BBQ at the Transit Centre, which included a jumping castle for kids and hair braiding in the colours of the Aboriginal flag.

The NAIDOC March on Monday was a heartwarming event, with awards presented to outstanding First Nations individuals.

The recipients included John Duggie, Joseph Williams, Joy Hampton, Barry Pope, Sheena Stokes, Barkly Work Camp, Stars/Clontarf, Mason Monkton, Maleah Presley, Lahaila Presley, Aiden James, Kane Seden, and Allira Davey.

Chamaine Peckham was also recognised for her exceptional dedication and hard work by cutting the NAIDOC cake.

On Tuesday, Nyinkka Nyunyu hosted cultural activities such as boomerang throwing, which was enjoyed by both children and adults.

The annual Elders Lunch was a highlight, providing elders and their families with a delicious meal, entertainment, and prizes.

Anyinginyi Health hosted a Family Fun Day on Thursday at Purkiss Reserve, which included a soccer workshop and a colour fun run.

The week concludes with a special performance by Australian Idol winner Royston Noell and an awards ceremony at Nyinkka Nyunyu.

Overall, it was a fantastic week of positive cultural exchange and community building.
