Cattle back on Lord Howe Island

Suzie Christensen, Lord Howe Island Board Report (extract), The Lord Howe Island Signal

A major milestone was celebrated on Sunday 26 June with the return of cattle to two of Lord Howe Island’s patient special leaseholders.

The Board fulfilled its final obligation under the REP, where agreements were made with landholders to arrange for livestock to be transported to the island once the REP had concluded.

Beef cattle have been grown and raised here almost as long as the island has been settled. The return of quality breeding animals will contribute to the island’s ability to produce its own food and ultimately community resilience.

The project involved a lot of planning, several delivery partners, and many staff and island residents before during and after the event. A big thank you is extended to all involved.
