No threat

Thick foam seen floating along sections of the Naracoorte Creek poses no threat to the environment, wildlife, or the public, according to the Naracoorte Lucindale Council.

Council’s administration says it is aware of the foam, but no evidence suggests the unusual sight is linked to pollution or contamination.

While the council has not received any community complaints, acting chief executive officer Paul McRostie said current observations indicate the foam most likely resulted from recent rainfall entering the creek.

The reassurance comes after local residents contacted The [Naracoorte] News on June 26, expressing concerns about what appeared to be significant amounts of foam forming in the creek behind Southeast Ford.

Some feared the foam may have been caused by alleged chemical run-off from surrounding paddocks or aerial spraying.

“Based on current observations, it is considered likely that the foam has resulted from recent rainfall events entering the creek,” Mr McRostie said.

“At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest contamination or any indication of harm to the environment or wildlife.”

Mr McRostie said the council would not undertake water quality testing because there was no identified environmental or public health risk.

“Council does not intend to undertake water testing at this time, as there is no identified environmental or public health risk associated with the current conditions,” he said.

“Based on available information, council does not propose any intervention as council anticipates the issue will resolve naturally as water conditions stabilise.”

He said the council would continue to monitor the situation and reassess its response if conditions changed.

“Should circumstances change or any evidence emerge indicating environmental impact, council will review the matter accordingly.”
