Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner’s visit to Tennant Creek this week was greeted with ire by many local residents sick of the continuing crime and antisocial behaviour in town.
Barkly MLA Steve Edgington was sympathetic with his constituents and agreed Mr Gunner seems to arrive only during the good times.
“Residents have a reason to be angry with the Chief Minister – since 2016 we have yet to see a detailed crime prevention plan that would tackle the issues in Tennant Creek,” he said.
“As I’ve pointed out on a number of occasions – the Barkly is a forgotten part of the NT when it comes to projects, investments and services.
“Instead what we have seen is a loss of jobs, loss of investment and increased crime.
“This wouldn’t be tolerated above the Berrimah Line.”
Another resident said “Gunner Do Nothing” was not welcome in Tennant Creek because he has never given the town any support.
“He has completely ignored us here in Tennant Creek.
“When we repeatedly asked us to inform us about the COVID situation here – he treated us like we didn’t exist.
“We have also asked him to do something about the crime – his response about that crime was like what crime?
“Is it any surprise that so many of us weren’t interested in attending the opening of the supermarket once we heard he was going to be a part of it?
“I saw the photos of the opening and Gunner looked scruffy – like he had just taken a load of rubbish to the dump.
“It is very hard for us to welcome and respect a man who couldn’t care less about us and only turns up for things he can take the glory for and get some votes.
“Gunner Do Nothing – you are a poor excuse for a Chief Minister.”
