Road travel out of the question in Cape

Rivers are pumping and bridges are under water across Cape York after a soaking month in the region.

Crossings at the Wenlock, Archer and Laura rivers are impassable, while the Myall Creek near Weipa is also in full flood.

Sections of the PDR have also been damaged, with sections of bitumen near the Hann River Roadhouse ripped to shreds by floodwater.

Weipa is on track for a two-metre wet season after 580mm was recorded at the airport this month.

There was a little bit more recorded in town at Rocky Point, with 609mm tipped out of the gauge on Eastern Avenue.

Coen copped 525mm for the month, while Kowanyama had just under 400mm.

Lockhart River was the wettest place in January after 651mm soaked the community.
