Inspiring young leaders

The trail blazing Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy has created a blueprint for other regions around South Australia. Talented athletes, including nine from the Naracoorte Lucindale area, are emerging as not only high performers in various sports, but as young leaders and role models for their peers and the community.

Narrandera hosts major horse event

Narrandera Adult Riding Club (NARC) recently hosted the BetaVet and Bendigo Bank HRCAV Top Teams Trophy (TTT) Horse Trials - the equivalent of the adult riding club State Championships ... One hundred riders travelled from all over Victoria and southern NSW to compete individually and also made up 23 teams of four riders. The riders competed in three phases over the two days - dressage, show jumping and cross country.

Blues bring second half heat

Late in the second quarter in Saturday’s clash between undefeated Cudgewa and winless Corryong, the Demons had limited the damage to a five goal deficit in a spirited showing but the Blues juggernaut got rolling after half time to show why they are deserved flag favourites.

Lions roar

Murrabit Recreation Reserve was the setting for the Golden Rivers round 6 match between Murrabit and the reigning 2023 premiers, Hay. The Lions dominated the game, but Murrabit showed determination, managing to score two goals in the first quarter. Hay's defence was strong in the second quarter, preventing the Blues from scoring.

Rescue tubes at popular swimming spots

Clarence Valley residents who enjoy visiting the beach or popular waterholes now have the peace of mind of increased safety after rescue tubes were installed in eight locations to help save lives. The rollout of the rescue tubes over the past few months now sees the lifesaving devices available to the public 24 hours a day in case anyone needs to be saved from the water.

Jake joins the 300-gamers

Saturday was a momentous day for the Birchip-Watchem Bulls, with club stalwart Jake Noonan playing his 300th game. The 38-year-old Noonan has spent his entire football career at George Cartwright Oval, playing all his junior and senior football with the Birchip Swans and Birchip-Watchem Bulls.

Trainer says gear change settles Miss Rockjoy

Gingin trainer Sue Olive says Miss Rockjoy, who has been nominated for the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) on June 1, has ability but is hard work as she is a bit of a hothead ... Despite her potential Olive said the daughter of Awesome Rock and Most Joyous was hard work to train.

Enjoy the Winter Walks Program

Once cropping is over, we can start to think about having a few weekends off and enjoying the autumn/winter days. And once again the Avon Plains Banyena Landcare Group will be running its regular Winter Walks Program. These events are open to all and sundry – with an interest in nature and a willingness to walk slowly through the landscape the only prerequisites.

Allora golf report

On Sunday, prior to teeing off for the Ty Gardner Concreting Monthly Medal, the Allora Sports Club Secretary, John Ellwood, paid tribute to club member Ray O’Leary. John spoke of Ray’s love of golf, and his commitment, together with Doreen, to keeping the greens in top condition. Ray shouted everyone a drink and a minutes' silence was held.

New improved arena perfect site for Marrar Campdraft

Marrar recently ran their annual Marrar CASE IH JBS Campdraft on a brand new improved arena surface and viewing area which was supported by a grant from the Stronger Communities Fund. The events kicked off at daylight on Friday with the excitement of 900 first round runs to push through.

cluBarham hosts Over 60s State Carnival

Barham is currently hosting the inaugural bowls Over 60s State Carnival. The previous format of Over 60s State Championships had 16 bowlers participating. With the new State Carnival event, 750 bowlers with 1,000 entries have made their way to Barham.

“Rat” represents in Origin game

Kimberly Grabham. Our homegrown superstar Rachael (Rat) Pearson exhibited a standout performance in the first of three State of Origin games. Her kicks were 100 per cent, with Rachael kicking five goals. Her play was described as game-changing.

Lions show grit over a spirited Wandella

The Lions were looking to make it 5 out of 5 for a perfect start to the season when they took on third placed Wandella on Saturday. In the opening five minutes of the first quarter, it was clear the Bombers had brought the heat, exhibiting a high energy and aggression at the contest that the Lions had to withstand until they could settle into their own game style ... From quick play-out of the centre clearance, the ball was again propelled into the Lions’ 50 with a poised Jack Cattanach adding to the scoreboard from another goal opportunity.

100 mile man

Wilson McShane. Twenty-three hours and 56 minutes. A lot can be achieved in this time, but few can say they have run 100 miles, or about 160 kilometres, in such a short timeframe. But this is what Kadina man Scott Martin achieved on Saturday, May 13, when he won the Irrational SOUTH 100 Miler through the Flinders Ranges.

2024 Banff Mountain Film Festival

Showground user groups offered same fees for one year as council considers future fees

The Casino Showground and Racecourse has had a massive makeover and was officially opened on April 20 ... The  new facility  includes a large undercover arena, an outdoor sand arena, turfed areas and covered stables, a new racehorse stable complex to accommodate up to 80 horses, and new car, truck and float parking areas.

Tennant speedway drivers impress at NT street stock titles

Diana Sawers. Local street stock drivers travelled to Alice Springs over the weekend to represent the Tennant Creek Speedway Club in the NT Street Stock Titles for 2024.

Thousands expected at Paradise Lagoons Campdraft  

Riders and spectators from around Australia will converge on the Region this weekend for the 22nd annual Paradise Lagoons Campdraft. The Paradise Lagoons Campdraft Association received $10,000 towards the event during round two of Council’s 2023/24 Community Assistance Program (CAP).  

Ninth in State Horse Trials

Over the weekend, the 120 best pony club riders and their horses from Victoria and southern New South Wales participated in the 2024 Pony Club Victoria State Horse Trials Championships held at the Finley Pony Club ... Amber King-Gee, a local rider, competed with her horse New Indian Rupee in the Grade Three Division B.

Local riders go hard

Four young bike riders from the Upper Murray acquitted themselves well in Round 2 of the Australian Hard Enduro championships at Wattle Creek near Bathurst, on the weekend. Organisers said the future of Hard Enduro is looking very secure with the amount of highly skilled juniors making their way through the course.

Hat trick of cups for Narrandera trotting Team Jones

The husband and wife team of Blake and Ellen Jones completed a recent Coolamon Cup three peat after Keto (Sweet Lou) led all the way to snare the harness racing silverware. Local reinsman Peter McRae was handed the reins on the Ellen Jones trained $3.60 second elect while her husband was in charge of the stablemate American Legacy.
