The added attraction of former Hawthorn Australian footballer Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico helped to draw a crowd of about 350 people at the recent Mirrool Silo Kick competition.

The iconic competition, now in its 32nd year, started in 1991.

Silo Kick competition President Jason Bryce said he was happy with a “pretty good turnout”.

He said the event raised about $12,000 to $15,000 for charity and would be donated to the Ardlethan and West Wyalong Can Assist branches and Temora Hospital.

The competition itself turned out to be the Harper show, with previous eight-time winner Rob Harper and his nephews Max and Jack reaching the final.

However, there was only one clear winner on the day.

“About 30 blokes had a kick,” Bryce said.

“Only three got to the grand final. Rob is 54 and said he didn’t really want to have a go but we persuaded him.

“Rob outclassed his two little nephews, but no one could kick it over the silo in the final, so not for the first time, the silo won in the end.

“Marnie Johnson won the ladies’ silo kick and her sister Maggie was the runner-up.”

Bryce said Dipper’s presence and charisma charmed the crowd throughout the day.

“I think everyone had a good time, Dipper was wonderful, he had a kick with all the kids and made them feel special,” he said.

“He auctioned a few items for us and made us some good money.

“He also answered questions for about half-an-hour and was involved in everything all day. He even had a go in the tug of war too.”

The winners in various events included: 9s netball: Bella Major
9s silo kick: Hunter Sherriff
13s netball: Anna Chalmers
13s silo kick: Jax Long
16s netball: Georgia Maxwell
16s silo kick: Eli Gooden
Open Ladies netball: Paige Brown.
