The Hon. Amber-Jade Sanderson, Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation; The Hon. Reece Whitby, Minister for Great Southern, Joint Media Release, 19 May 2026

Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson has secured a delay to the decommissioning of the Albany Gas Distribution System, giving the community more time to navigate the transition.

Provider ATCO has decided to exit the market in Albany, with the three-year decommissioning process originally set to begin in the second half of 2026.

ATCO has now agreed to delay the process to early 2027, following a request from Minister Sanderson.

The Cook Labor Government is working closely with residents, businesses, and the City of Albany to ensure the community has access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy options for years to come.

The 2026-27 State Budget includes $9 million to transition social housing properties in the area to alternative energy sources and $1.8 million to assess options for the wider community.

A working group has also been convened to ensure local knowledge and community priorities are at the centre of decision-making.

In addition, the Cook Labor Government and City of Albany have also secured a commitment from ATCO to defer the decommissioning of the town’s centre to the final phase of the decommissioning process.

No immediate action is required by customers at this time. More information will be provided on ATCO’s decommissioning timeline as it becomes available.

ATCO customers and interested stakeholders can go to the Energy Policy WA website to sign up for updates.

Comments attributed to Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

“I wrote to ATCO requesting a delay to the decommissioning process to give locals more time to navigate the transition, and I am pleased that they have agreed to this new timeline.

“These extra months will provide crucial breathing room for families, businesses, and the council to assess the best options for their individual energy needs.

“The Cook Labor Government committed to supporting the Albany community through this process, to ensure the town continues to have reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy options into the future.”

Comments attributed to Great Southern Minister Reece Whitby:

“Albany locals have made it clear they wanted more time, and this decision delivers exactly that.

“The Cook Labor Government is listening to the community and working closely with the City of Albany to make sure local voices are front and centre in these decisions.

“We know reliable and affordable energy is critical for Albany’s future, which is why the State Budget is investing in both immediate support and long-term planning for the community.

“Importantly, no immediate action is required from customers, and the community will continue to be kept informed as planning progresses.”

Comments attributed to ATCO Australia CEO John Ivulich:

“ATCO will continue to work with the WA Government and the community to ensure a smooth transition for existing customers on the Albany gas network.

“We recognise that households and businesses will need time to prepare for this change and we will undertake the decommissioning in manner which minimises the impact on those affected.”
