Narrandera mayor Neville Kschenka has returned from a visit to the site of the Western Sydney International Airport convinced that while regional shires struggle to receive funding for important road infrastructure to provide access to markets and ports, city projects appear to have almost unlimited funding.

Cr Kschenka visited the airport on day one of the conference and said construction of the airport was well advanced, including a new railway station, and both passenger and cargo services to be provided. This is a multi-billion-dollar project supported by access roads and freeways.
Together with deputy mayor Sue Ruffles, Cr Bob Manning and general manager Tim Coote the Narrandera council representatives were attending the annual LGNSW conference in Penrith.
Guest speakers at the conference included Minister for Local Government, Hon Ron Hoenig.
Most councils were concerned about the new code of meeting practice being introduced, but there was no intention to change this.
“Premier Chris Minns spoke about affordable housing, but the conversation was mainly centred around Sydney and suburbs. He did not take any questions on the day,” Cr Kschenka said.
One hundred and thirty-four motions from councils were submitted for consideration, although only around 90 were put due to time constraints. The outstanding motions will be referred to the Association’s Board for consideration.
Narrandera Shire Council’s motion ‘that LGNSW lobby the NSW state government to require Essential Energy to charge rural customers daily supply charges commensurate with those being charged to city coastal customers’ was passed unanimously.
The NSW planning reforms were discussed and introduction of AI in this space is occurring.
“The housing shortage was discussed again. I questioned why we need so many migrants at this time and where were they employed. I also asked what assistance councils can receive to address the need to have Crown Land released, including land subject to Aboriginal land claims,” Cr Kschenka said.
“Kiersten Fishburn, secretary, Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, replied that she would be prepared to discuss the matter with us.
“Council sustainability was a priority for all Councils and a return to one per cent FAGS grants is required.
