A new grant is set to enable a Riverland tourism business showcase the region’s environmental sites to increased numbers of visitors.

The State Government earlier this month announced Murtho-based Canoe the Riverland had received a $50,000 grant through the Experience Nature Tourism Fund’s third round.

Canoe the Riverland operator Brenton Carle said the grant would enable the purchase of a 12-seater pontoon boat to conduct tours with larger groups.

“At the moment we run the dinghy tours, which take out four people, so this is that next evolution to try and get more people on the water and showcase the beautiful national park,” Mr Carle said.

“We will be running from our property just outside of Murtho, and (tours) will go up into Plummer’s Creek. We’ll be able to explore all the backwaters of Plummer’s Creek, Kylie Creek, Bulyong and Nelbuck.

“We’re also looking at running a specific internment camp tour.”

Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said supporting environmentally sustainable tourism operations had been a goal for the program.

“The Experience Nature Tourism Fund is helping unlock our state’s tourism potential, giving visitors even more reasons to choose South Australia,” Ms Bettison said.

“Sharing our state’s incredible natural landscapes, rich cultural history and stunning wildlife with domestic and international travellers in a responsible and sustainable way is what this fund is all about.”

Mr Carle said allowing increased numbers of locals and tourists to experience Riverland environmental attractions was a priority.

“We’re really keen to invest in the Riverland, it’s a beautiful place,” he said.

“We do a lot of school programs, kayak tours and dinghy tours, but feedback (has been)… sometimes people are hesitant of going on a dinghy tour, as they want to be in something a bit more substantial.

“This will offer that, and being able to offer tours for 12 people at a time means we can run more (consistently).
