Nhill Lake update

Recent stories

The Nhill Lake and surrounding recreational area has and still continues to attract many users. The ongoing maintenance under the guidance of Dale Stanford and a small group of volunteers is very much appreciated and valued.

With the warmer weather upon us, another dosage of blue aquatic dye has recently been added to help provide a healthier and balanced ecosystem. The dye is environmentally friendly and safe for all inhabitants of the lake, including fish, yabbies, plants and micro-organisms, and does not harm humans or pets. The dye reduces UV rays and heat absorption from the sun, therefore the growth of dangerous algae is greatly reduced. Visually, it makes the colour of the lake more appealing.

As part of the Hindmarsh Shire Streetscape Master Plan a walking track has been constructed from the corner of Victoria and Pine Streets to the lake via Towns Lane. The installation of solar powered lighting and bollards along the route has improved the safety of users. Soon signage near the track will be constructed to assist the promotion of the Nhill Lake to visitors. The lake committee also intend to improve signage around the lake and surrounds.

A few months ago, a new free electric BBQ was installed thanks to a donation from the late Trevor Borgelt just prior to his passing earlier in the year. The lake now provides three BBQs for all visitors to use. Discussions are currently in the pipeline to upgrade the power supply and electrical box as concerns if all BBQs are operating at once, the power may max out. If an improved power supply was available, it may encourage more groups and events to use the lake’s facilities.

The silver perch fingerlings released in April are quickly growing in size and with the recent addition of some mature trout some fishing stories are ready to be created. No doubt there are yabbies lurking somewhere, but we never know where they are, but they do!

The lake, walking tracks and the boardwalk provides so much, however the continued maintenance done by a small group of volunteers is never ending. The committee is always open to any new ideas the community may have to add or improve the lake and surrounding areas, whether it’s big or small, or a short or long term project. Nhill is very fortunate to have such a wonderful asset right on our doorstep and we need to hold on to it for many generations to come. Whether it’s used for walking, jogging, fishing, kayaking, skiing or swimming, we want to keep our ‘feel good’ place ours.

Please feel free to speak to any of the committee members if you have any queries. The new committee is as follows: Dale Stanford (Pres.), Wayne Pilgrim (Sec.), Kylee Williams (Treas.), Pam Cramer, Stu Bone, Richard Williams, Luke Oldaker, Heather Dufty, Sha Blut Doh or Diana Taw. As maintenance costs continue to increase donations are still greatly accepted. Please forward donations to the Nhill Lake Committee Inc. BSB : 063-728 Acc. No. 10023578
