The official opening of the Catholic school in Woodburn is a reminder of how far the riverside town has come in its recovery after the 2022 flood disaster.
Principal Jeanette Wilkins gave an emotional speech at the blessing and dedication of St Joseph’s Primary School in Woodburn today, Friday, November 1.
“My heart is filled with gratitude and pride,” Ms Wilkins said to the audience of 200 including staff, students, their families, former students and guests.
The flood may have taken the physical structure of the school but it didn’t take our spirit, she said.
Within three weeks of the flood disaster, St Joseph’s students were going to school at St John’s Church in Evans Head.
”There was an outpouring of kindness and people were so good to us,” Ms Wilkins said.
”People opened their hearts and their wallets. Your generosity provided financial support but also reminded us we are never alone.
”You kindness is the foundation on which we have rebuilt the school.”
Ms Wilkins thanked staff, the community, builders, other churches and Catholic schools. Her biggest thank you was to the children.
”You are the reason we do everything. Your enthusiasm for life and growth inspires us every day.”
Ms Wilkins fought back tears during her speech. But she got through it.
“This school is where dreams are nurtured and futures are shaped,” she said.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn officially declared the school open. It was her first visit to Woodburn since becoming Governor-General of Australia in July this year.
”I was delayed getting here because we hosted the King and Queen of England,” Ms Mostyn said.
“I’ll come back regularly.”
She acknowledged the loss and trauma after the floods.
”Moving forward can be exhausting sometimes,” she said.
”The work of recovery continues throughout Woodburn. Your recovery, wellbeing and progress is very important to me — and to all Australians.”
Bishop of Lismore Gregory Homeming blessed the school and sprinkled holy water on students and guests.
Students performed a dance about the flood recovery journey back to Woodburn.
Guests were able to then take a look at the new classrooms.
