Jackson Murrie doesn’t fight for money — or even for a trophy.
He does mixed martial arts cage fighting for the glory of it all.
The videographer from Kyogle won the Grow Strong Fight Series in Warwick on March 28.
“It’s a nice feeling having my wife and 11 year old daughter in my corner,” Jackson said.
Jackson last fought in 2021 so its been a long time between bouts.
He likes the MMA fights because they are more intelligent than boxing or wrestling.
“In boxing, it’s punching but in MMA there are no constraints, you can punch, kick and grapple,” he said.
“The beauty of MMA, it gives you options depending on your strength and body power.”
Jackson said he is a “grappler” and he’s good at keeping his opponent on the ground.
“It’s live problem solving, it’s a strategy,” Jackson said.
“It looks violent from the outside. My least favourite part of the fight is hurting someone.”
Jackson runs a gym in the shared space at the boxing club at Kyogle Showgrounds.
His classes are called Humble MMA.
Jackson’s wife Amber Murrie is also into MMA.
“I met my wife at a fight in 2021,” Jackson said.
“I’m super big on getting women involved in MMA.”
Amber and Jackson have two daughters with another baby on the way.
What he needs is a decent space for Humble MMA.
If anyone in Kyogle has an empty shed, let me know, he said.
