Hindmarsh Shire Councillor and OAM recipient Rob Gersch has announced that he will not be standing for re-election in October, marking the end of an almost 40-year tenure representing the Hindmarsh Shire.
Rob was first elected in January 1983 during a by-election and has served continuously since then, with the exception of a two-year period during amalgamation with commissioners. His leadership roles include one term as Shire President and six terms as Mayor.

As his term concludes, Rob will fall just a few weeks short of completing 40 years as a Hindmarsh Shire Councillor. Throughout his career, he has represented the Shire on numerous regional and state committees, including 19 years with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), 10 years as Chairperson of Rural Councils Victoria, 20 years with the Wimmera Development Association—four of those as Chairman—and many other committees over the years.
Reflecting on his service, Rob said, “It has been a privilege to represent the Shire, the community of Nhill, and the rural sector of Victoria. I will not be standing for council in the upcoming elections. After nearly 40 years, the time has come. I thank all of you who have supported me over this time.”
He added, “While local government was not a priority when I was first asked to stand, it turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made.”
Rob encourages anyone interested in representing their community to consider running for council. He advises potential candidates to talk to Shire staff, current councillors, the public, and their families before making the decision to stand for election.
Rob highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including Hindmarsh Shire’s instrumental role in the formation of Rural Councils Victoria, where he was elected Chairman for the first 10 years. Other notable accomplishments include the refurbishment of the Nhill Community Centre—twice—the construction of the new Shire office, and the integration of the Karen community into Nhill and the Shire.
Although he is stepping down from council, Rob will remain available to the community as a Justice of the Peace.
“I have had tremendous support from my wife Marian, my family, and it has been a great experience working with all Shire CEOs, SMT, staff—both indoor and outdoor—and many councillors over this time. So please, put your hand up today to represent our great Shire,” Rob concluded.
