Evacuation centre set up in Gingin

The Department of Communities has set up an evacuation centre at the Bendigo Centre Recreation Grounds on Weld St in Gingin for people affected by the Bindoon-Chittering bushfire, which has burnt 2600ha.

At 4.02pm the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said it was safe to leave in a westerly direction.

People north of Lennard Brook should travel north along Cockram Rd and those south of Lennard Brook should travel south along Cockram Rd to Brand Hwy.

A bushfire emergency warning is in place for people in an area bound by Ashworth Rd, Mooliabeenee Rd, Crest Hill Rd, the intersection of Gray and Teatree roads, Creighton Rd and Cockram Rd in Gingin, Bindoon, Lennard Brook, Mooliabeenee and Moondah.

A bushfire watch and act is in place for people in an area west of the emergency warning bound by Cockram Rd, Brand Hwy and Honeycomb Rd and an area south of the emergency warning bound by Brand Hwy, Creighton Rd, Reserve Rd and Ioppolo Rd in Breera.

A bushfire advice is in place for people in an area bound by the intersection of Brand Hwy and Dewar Rd to Ashworth Rd and Mooliabeenee Rd and Honeycomb Rd including the Gingin townsite.

Teatree Rd is closed between Mooliabeenee Rd and Gray Rd and Cockram Rd is closed between Mooliabeenee Rd and Brand Hwy.

The bushfire is moving in a north westerly direction and is not contained or controlled.

At 5.10pm Western Power advised about 103 homes and businesses in Coonabidgee remained without power supply due to the bushfire.

Those within the bushfire zone who remain without power will not be able to be restored until crews are able to access the fire ground under the direction of DFES.

Initially power supply was lost to 920 homes and businesses in Mooliabeenee, Coonabidgee, Cullalla, Gingin, Granville, Moondah, Beermullah, Lennard Brook, Muckenburra, Ginginup, Bambun and Yeal.

The majority of these customers have had their power restored through backfeeding. Additional customers may experience outages due to the changing conditions on the ground.

About 240 support personnel and firefighters are attending with aerial support sent to assist ground crews.

Never fly a drone, model aircraft or multirotor near bushfires.

Doing so poses a major safety risk to firefighting personnel in the air and on the ground and forces aircraft to be grounded or redirected, hindering firefighting efforts.

The bushfire was reported at 9.07am on January 13 fire was reported.
