Demons test reigning premiers

An unbeaten partnership of 111 at Brim took Wimmera-Mallee cricket’s ’22-’23 premiership team, Brim K.S.H. to a challenging 3/171 against Wycheproof-Narraport on Saturday.

Whilst that total proved to be out of the Demons’ reach, they put up a gallant fight to finish at 7/153 from their 40 overs.

Leading the way for Brim K.S.H. were captain Isaac McPherson 102 not out, Jeremy Preston 34 not out, and Lachlan McGinniss 19. Wyche’s best bowling figures were those of captain Tom Trewin 2/32 (8), who then went on to score 44, while team-mates among the runs were Hunter Connelly 56, and Will Allan 22. For Brim K.S.H., Charlie Dean and Isaac McPherson picked up two wickets each.

At St. Arnaud, Marnoo’s top order batsmen set the foundation for a total of 151 from 38.5 overs, those into double figures being Nic Baird 43, Stuart Lang 30, Connor Brophy 26, and Brendan Marrs 16. Multiple wicket-takers for St. Arnaud were captain Lachie Patching 3/20 (7.5), Carl Torney 3/25 (8), and Kynan Torney 2/26 (5). In reply, opener Bruce Hando anchored the innings with 78, while Hayden Torney scored 21, and Jacob Patching 18, but with lower order wickets falling cheaply, the Saints were all out for 139. Five bowlers shared the wickets, Darcy Cameron taking 3/22 (7), and David Lang 3/4 (4.3).

At Warracknabeal, Donald-Jeffcott teenager, Noah Berry, dominated the scene with an unbeaten 131 (including 12 fours and 8 sixes!), supported by Trent Grant 10, Daniel Atkins 33, and Lachie Jones 10 not out, the innings ending on 8/259. For St. Mary’s, Nick Toscana took 2/55 (7), and Lincoln Westerland 2/11 (2). After tea, the visitors brought the game to an early finish, as Eddie Landwehr limited the St. Mary’s innings to 46 in 22 overs, his brilliant bowling figures being 8/10 from his 8 overs. The only batsmen to trouble the bowlers were Nick Toscano 26, and Leigh Somers 10.

“B” Grade
On its home ground, Watchem set Birchip a target of 171 for victory, after impressive batting by Connor Boyle 82 and Daniel Slater 34. Outstanding bowlers figures for Birchip were those of Ty Colbert 4/31 (8), Jack Knights 2/27 (6.4), and Connor Lee 2/31. (8).

Birchip’s response fell 30 short, despite the efforts of Hudson McCredden 41, Connor Lee and Charles Barber 18 each, and Cameron Bennett 11. Watchem bowlers to do the most damage were Seamus Lowry 2/23 (6), and Riley Hogan 2/5 (1.3).

The “B” grade game at Brim ran its full course, with Southern Mallee Giants scoring 4/180, before restricting Brim K.S.H. to 7/144 in its 40 overs. Leading the way for the Giants, Luke Mitchell scored 82 not out, and Leigh Hateley 44, while for Brim K.S.H. the top scorers were Barry Schilling 37 not out, Royce Bennett 34, and Mark Williams 13. Among the wicket-takers were Brim K.S.H.’s Dale Stephan 2/29, and the Giants’ Luke Mitchell 2/23 and Adrian Love 2/21.

On the Jeffcott oval turf, Donald-Jeffcott lost only 4 wickets in amassing a winning total of 4/266 against St. Mary’s. Contributing to that score were Will Noble 67, captain Jack Tellefson 65, Kalon Green and Josh Gilmour both 39 not out, Jake Needs 26 not out, and Sam Postlethwaite 16. Ten St. Mary’s bowlers were called on, with Jed Hartnell taking 2/37 (4). St. Mary’s then batted out its full 40 overs for a total of 9/92, of which Aiden Keys made 39 and Kael Zanker 20. Outstanding Donald-Jeffcott bowling figures were those of Joseph Praveen 5/19 (8), and Jacob Donnellon 2/26 (7).
