A long-awaited start for the Baaka Cultural Centre

It was wonderful to see the Chairwoman of the Baaka Corporation, Rhonda (Lee) Hynch celebrate the Ground-breaking Ceremony on the site of the future Baaka Cultural Centre. I thought it a memorable occasion for all citizens of Wilcannia. Finally, after twenty-one years the eyesore remnants of the former Knox & Downs store site will be incorporated within a smart new building. With careful planning this centre will be a huge asset within town.

The Aboriginal owned and operated centre provides the opportunity to revitalise Baakantji culture, create jobs and boost tourism.

I wish to express my gratitude to all those who organised this special day.

The Smoking Ceremony was sensitive and appropriate. Back in Baker Park the entertainment and diversity of the food stalls – bush foods, Indian curry and rice and tasty Thia spring rolls was indicative of community diversity and cohesion. The inclusion of St. Theresa’s School choir was a welcome first for the Baaka Corporation.

I hope all people of Wilcannia band together in harmony to bring your cultural centre alive as a contemporary showcase for Baakantji provenance and tradition. Language and Baakantji culture are so important for today’s young people and future generations.

Thank you all for the unforgettable day.
