Dentist Renae Philp and her dental assistant Melanie Villella believe they have one of the best jobs in Australia as they travel to remote communities across Queensland.

This week, the Royal Flying Doctor Service duo will finish working in Dajarra before a trip to Boulia from August 23.

Dr Philp began her job as a dentist with the RFDS in 2020.

“I felt I was ready for a challenge. I had considered a role like this previously but as I have two young sons, the time just hadn’t been right,” she told North West Weekly.

“I live in the Scenic Rim and have, and continue to, work at my local private dental practice.

“I have previously worked in clinics out west and really enjoyed the experience. “So, when I saw the advertisement for the RFDS dental job I thought I’d love that.”

Ms Villella, from Mareeba, joined the RFDS a year earlier because she knew it would give her the opportunity to visit rural communities in Queensland and provide services to those who needed it the most.

“Meeting amazing country folks who are so excited to have us in their community and being able to service the community at no cost to them,” she said.

“It is such a good feeling, especially when you get to help farmers who are working hard to put food on our plates and are struggling financially.”

Dr Philp chimed in: “What do I enjoy the most? Hands down, I enjoy the adventure.

“Visiting new communities, meeting amazing people and hearing their stories, it’s so much fun. In our down time I really love getting out and exploring the local area.”

Ms Villella said talking to her clients, especially young children, was a rewarding element.

“Today, actually, (I asked) what is your favourite vegetable and the child replied “steak”,” she said with a laugh.

As with every job, there are difficult aspects.

“Personally, being away from family, friends, and my bed (can be hard),” Ms Villella said.

Dr Philp added: “My role is part-time, meaning I spend two weeks away with the RFDS and four weeks at home chasing my two boys, who are 5 and 9.

“Their tolerance of my time away, plus my husband’s amazing support, make this role possible. I am very lucky.

“The work can be challenging but the job is immensely satisfying and the patients are so appreciative of the service.

“The RFDS brand is so highly respected, and it is truly an honour to be a part of such an amazing service.”
