Maldon triumphs in grand finals: Football and netball teams bring home the premiership

It was a weekend to remember for the Maldon Football and Netball Club, with both the Under 17.5s Football and Under 17s Netball teams claiming Grand Final victories on Saturday. The young stars made their club and community proud, capping off an incredible season with hard-fought wins.

Matthew wins at Brussels

Only weeks after bringing home the bronze medal from the Paris Olympics Matthew Denny has excelled at the Diamond League held in Brussels at the weekend. With an opening round throw of 69.96m Matthew took out the discus final for the second straight year and broke the 40 year old meet record.

Biggest RFL final crowd in years at premier Narrandera Sportsground

AFL officials were pleased to see a large increase in the crowd for this year’s Riverina League grand final at the Narrandera Sportsground on Sunday. What was described as the biggest Riverina League grand final crowd post COVID turned out to watch Collingullie-Wagga upset the previously undefeated Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong.

East Greenmount equestrian instructor Linda Shore, alongside her student Nicola Saunders from Toowoomba, have just returned from spending a week training and competing in Working Equitation in Canada at the 2024 Cross Nations Cup ... Working Equitation is currently one of the fastest growing new equestrian disciplines in Australia with one of the largest clubs in Queensland based in Toowoomba.

Kaniva Women Premiers 2024

The highly anticipated women’s hockey grand final between Kaniva Women and Yanac Women ended in a thrilling contest, showcasing the best of skill, determination, and teamwork. Both teams, who have had a strong season, met on the synthetic turf field in Dimboola for what would be an intense and closely contested game.

Magpies take historic win

Hay Magpies won Sunday’s Group 20 women’s tackle grand final, to secure their place in history as the first premiership team of the competition, and the first women’s tackle team from Hay to win a cup. After losing to Tullibidgeal Lakes United (TLU) Sharks in the first week of the finals, Hay caused an upset in the semis, beating Griffith Black and Whites to book the grand final berth.

Yanac Premiers

Another chapter was written for one of the Wimmera’s longest-running sporting dynasties with the Yanac Tigers winning their twenty-first premiership in the thirty-five seasons of the competition, defeating long-time rival, the Warrack Hoops. The Tigers started strongly, with Todd Alexander converting a penalty corner midway through the first quarter to put the reigning premiers in the lead, and in a worrying sign for the challengers, their key midfielder Tim Jorgensen left the field minutes later, struggling with a hamstring injury.

Sand drags a high-octane success

Wallaroo welcomed sand drags for the first time on the weekend after Copper Coast Motorsports sand drags track opening earlier this month ... attracted more than 1500 spectators and 70 entrants over the two days, with event organisers saying the meeting was a major economic boost for Yorke Peninsula.

All roads led to Donald

Andrew Bayles’s early aerial photograph speaks for itself. Every available parking space had been taken up well before football’s senior grand final ... On Saturday, Donald delivered a “double whammy” with a record-breaking grand final day alongside the Borung Highway, as well as a widely broadcast race meeting on the Donald racecourse, little more than a stone’s throw away from the football, netball and hockey.

Warriors curtain falls on 2024
