Council to host BMX, skate, and scoot competition and art workshop for Greater Shepparton Youth Fest 2024
Greater Shepparton City Council, in partnership with the Victorian State Government and FReezA, is excited to announce a BMX, skate, and scoot competition and art workshop as part of Greater Shepparton Youth Fest 2024. These events will take place on Sunday 29 September 2024 at the Shepparton Skate Park.

Golf clinic for the schools
Golf NSW Western Region Manager Gary Begg thought it would be a good idea to bring Senior Regional Manager for Jack Newton Junior Golf, Mark Ingrey to Wilcannia to show him the world of golf in the far west, and the struggles the Club has in maintaining the course, particularly in wet periods. They conducted four clinics … for students from both schools.
Tigers under-14s into grand final
In the Uniting Church under-fourteens’ second semi-final match it was the young Tigers who got the grand final spot with a win over the Boort Magpies. The under-14s played a very good game and kicking with the wind in the first quarter, the Tigers took a handy lead, which was cut to 6 points at half-time.
Cowboys outclass Warriors on road to grand final Â
Glyn Rees. The Warwick Cowboys crack outfit were a class above opponents the ‘Farm Spray’ Wattles Warriors in Sunday’s local derby reserve grade major semi-final at Gatton’s Cahill Park, skidding in to fulltime 38 – 4 winners and booking a birth in the 2024 Toowoomba Rugby League Grand Final at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium on September 14th.
From small things, big things grow
The 8th Light Horse Indi Upper Murray Troop inaugural training day on Sunday at Tintaldra was a mixture of professional instruction and the sheer enjoyment and enthusiasm of participants. Professional tent pegging judge, Terry Phillips, provided tent pegging and skill at arms instruction while Keith Sheather from Adelong set the tone for the training day in his beautifully maintained great-uncle’s Light Horse uniform and his horse Clancy.
Cod and crays come under protection
The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) and NSW Department of Primary industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) are reminding recreational fishers that the Murray Cod and Murray Crayfish seasons have ended. NSW DPIRD Program Leader Fishing Stocking and Enhancement, Jim Harnwell, said the Murray Cod fishery is subject to a three-month closure every year to protect our number-one native sportsfish during their breeding season.
Cohuna Kangas out
The Cohuna Kangas journeyed to Greenham Park, Balranald, to challenge the Balranald Kangaroos and vie for advancement in the Central Murray finals series ... The match intensity was hard-hitting, pushing off the ball and vocal taunts ... By the end of the first quarter, the Cohuna Kangas had a 33-point lead.
Yamba paralympian makes 50m final
Yamba’s Alexa Leary broke a Paralympic S9 record in her heat of the 50-metre freestyle in Paris last week with a blistering 27.69 second swim securing her a spot in the highly competitive final. The budding triathlon star’s world was turned upside down in 2021 in a severe cycling crash…

Volunteers needed to continue a Riverland miracle
Madison Eastmond. A Berri equine charity is searching for volunteers so its therapy services for the wider Riverland community can continue ... Over the past three years, Miracle Park Stables have provided therapeutic avenues for those struggling with mental health and/or have a disability to build self-esteem, self-efficacy, resilience and emotional regulation skills through a variety of programs.
Renmark do the soccer double
Renmark Olympic claimed the rare feat of the double premiership, after its A grade women’s outfits was crowned premiers following a trouncing of Barmera on the final day. With the premiership on the line, it was Amelia Koumbarakos who rose to the occasion, bagging five of Olympic’s six goals.
Dog trials are on again at Yanac
The timing of the Yanac Yard Dog trials has changed and now will be held on Saturday 21st September. The Yanac locals in conjunction with the Yanac Hockey Club will get busy and put on the Yanac Yard Dog Trials. Dog trialling commenced at Yanac in 1992 and this year will be the 29th dog trial. A great effort for a small community.
Brave Bulls hold out surging Tigers
In dramatic scenes a brave Birchip-Watchem held out the surging Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers by an oh so tight 2 point margin. The Bulls stormed into North Central’s grand final in a thrilling second semi-final where the scoreboard clock, brightly illuminated and counting down, still showed 2 minutes to play as the siren sounded at Donald’s Goff Letts oval.
Kate rides high in Brazil
Joanna Tucker. Maitland 16-year-old equestrian Kate Mahar represented Australia on the world stage last month. She placed 12th from a field of 16 at the 2024 Youth World Reining Cup in Avare, Brazil ... Ms Mahar was Australia’s only representative, and said her favourite moments were making connections with other young riders in the competition lead-in.
Golf tournament scores a hundred
Last weekend the Donald golfers celebrated a milestone in the club’s history when they hosted their annual three day tournament which was also their 100th – and what a weekend it was! ... Eighty golfers and ex-golfers celebrated Donald’s 100th golf tournament at a dinner on Saturday night with many of them coming back to Donald especially for the occasion.
Birchip Rifle Club turns 125
On Sunday, August 25, the Birchip Rifle club celebrated its 125th anniversary with a gathering of members and guests on the range for a barbecue lunch and presentations ... The first shoot was held on the 16th August 1899. These early shoots were fired using Martini Henry rifles ... Since the Birchip club changed to electronic targets it can now shoot all year around ...
Significant piece of Narrandera AFL history
A very significant local football photograph has come to light from Narrandera resident Ian "Rat" Rankin who found it from the period when his great-grandfather coached Narrandera in 1900. Only his great-pop’s name was on the back - Edward Armstrong ... Before this photo his great-grandfather coached the Australian Rules team at Gillenbah.

Cudgewa’s unbeaten 27-game run came to a shuddering halt in the biggest match of the year when Bullioh stormed home in the Upper Murray grand final on Saturday for a commanding 35-point victory ... In A Grade netball Cudgewa defeated Bullioh by 12 goals to make it back-to-back flags.
