The highly anticipated women’s hockey grand final between Kaniva Women and Yanac Women ended in a thrilling contest, showcasing the best of skill, determination, and teamwork. Both teams, who have had a strong season, met on the synthetic turf field in Dimboola for what would be an intense and closely contested game.

The game started with both teams applying pressure, but neither Kaniva nor Yanac was able to break the deadlock early on. Kaniva was first to score late in the first quarter with a breakaway field goal from Lisa Stimson. The large crowd erupted in cheers for the Kaniva team, helping to lift the teams confidence into quarter time.

Kaniva’s disciplined backline made sure to limit Yanac’s scoring opportunities. Kaniva forwards were moving the ball into their forward line with outstanding collaboration on the field. Kaniva secured a short corner penalty and Imogen Williams was able to convert this to the scoreboard, extending their lead 2-0. But Yanac wasn’t backing down and they were next to score. Half time score 2-1.

The second half saw an increase in intensity, with both teams making tactical adjustments. Kaniva Women came out strong, with several penetrating runs into their forward half. Taking the ball quickly up the wings and working well in pairs, Kaniva were able to get around the Yanac defenders. Yanac were quick to turn the ball over and send it to their attacking end, putting pressure back on Kaniva.

With the strong crowd support Kaniva were determined to hold onto the lead. Everyone was giving 110 per cent. Kaniva had a few close attempts on goal with the ball only narrowly missing. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as the time ticked down. Both teams were desperate to get another goal on the board before the game was over.

Final whistle sounded and Kaniva Women emerged victorious with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Yanac Women, securing the championship title.

The grand final was a fantastic showcase of women’s hockey at its best, with both teams delivering a match to remember.
