Birchip-Watchem initiated the first offensive of the under-12 game, with Oscar Sharp and Denly Tyler demonstrating exceptional skill, outmanoeuvring several Charlton players to advance the ball into the circle, resulting in a short corner.
Charlton’s goalkeeper cleared the ball with a kick, and Toby Bourke swiftly removed it from the circle.
The Bulls quickly regained their attacking momentum as Archie Tyler intercepted the ball at midfield, skilfully navigated past Charlton’s defenders, and slotted the ball to the left of the goalkeeper to secure the opening goal. Denly Tyler also sought to extend the lead, but Isaac Roberts and Toby Bourke effectively neutralized his forward movements.
Birchip-Watchem maintained its aggressive approach into the second half, creating additional opportunities through Archie Tyler and Frankie McClelland. Charlton’s defensive line, bolstered by the addition of Grace Morghem, held firm, denying several deep attacks within the D.

Underage
Charlton was awarded a short corner within the first two minutes of play, followed by two additional opportunities, but was unable to capitalise on any of them. The ball advanced as far as the 25-yard line before being returned to Charlton’s defensive D. Donald responded with a high aerial pass, creating another short corner for Charlton. Despite passing the ball around, Charlton lost its advantage, and Donald quickly counterattacked, generating its own shot on goal.
It wasn’t until the final five minutes of the first half that Donald earned a short corner of its own. A flurry of attacks ensued, with five attempts on goal thwarted by the Navies’ defenders, before Rhys Gahan eventually kicked the ball clear of the D. Amali played a key role in defence, clearing the ball further downfield, enabling Charlton to mount an attack.
Charlton’s forward momentum was halted outside the D, allowing Donald to regain possession and create space for a swift return into its attacking D. Baylee Pearse sent the ball into the D, where it was deflected into the air by a defender’s stick, allowing Oakley Brennan to execute a baseball-style hit to score the first goal.
Charlton, eager to respond, quickly pushed the ball into its attack but was denied by Brady Cumming, who cleared it to the centre line. Undeterred, Charlton’s persistence was rewarded with a penalty corner midway through the second half, though goalkeeper Charlotte Bicket successfully cleared the ball from the D.
A pass from Navaeh Pearse into Donald’s D was picked up by a Donald attacker and swiftly relayed to Oakley Brennan, who added to his goal tally with a well-placed shot just inside the left post. Charlton pressed forward again, delivering a precise pass across the D to Murphy Fitzpatrick, who skilfully manoeuvred around three players to earn another short corner. Despite being awarded three more short corners in the final five minutes, Charlton was unable to reduce Donald’s lead.

Women
Charlton began the match with possession and immediately displayed its aggressiveness, earning a short corner within the first two minutes. Tessa Fitzpatrick’s shot narrowly missed, hitting the outside of the goal. Charlton then secured another short corner, but the attempt was deflected off a stick and landed on top of the net.
St Arnaud quickly responded with a pass from Kate Gifford to Brylea Swanton at the centre line, who made a run down the pitch into the D. Her shot on goal was deflected by Addison Wright’s stick, sending the ball into the net for the opening score. Some poor tackling from both sides led to each team losing a player temporarily to the bench.
In the second quarter, Charlton pressed hard for an equalizer, with Tessa Fitzpatrick proving to be a key playmaker, creating several short corners. One injection to Fitzpatrick was passed left to Kelly Wright, whose shot was promptly kicked away by goalkeeper Sophie Male. It took nearly half the quarter for St Arnaud to break into its D, but Kate Gifford’s shot went wide, allowing Charlton to regain the initiative. With two minutes remaining, Charlton was awarded a short corner, and Jo Southcombe capitalized, scoring a crucial goal to equalize just 10 seconds before the quarter ended.
Sophie Male, St Arnaud’s goalkeeper, continued to frustrate Charlton with her strong defensive play. Both teams showed signs of fatigue as they resorted to attempting long passes through a congested field, rather than employing strategic short passes. A defensive clearance by Kate Gifford bounced over several Charlton sticks and was picked up by Jenny Bibby, who passed to Addison Wright, retrieved the ball, and, after a scramble in front of the goal, increased St Arnaud’s lead to 2-1.
Charlton responded swiftly, moving the ball back into their attacking end, but the shot struck the side of the goal. Xanthe Fitzpatrick was dispossessed outside the D by Kate Gifford, but Gifford’s pass was intercepted, and the ball returned to Charlton’s D. Charlton then earned three consecutive penalty corners, but all were denied, including a high ball cleared behind the goalkeeper by Nicola Kirk.
Charlton dominated possession in the fourth quarter and had multiple opportunities as St Arnaud lost players due to infringements on two occasions. Despite the pressure, St Arnaud’s defence held firm, successfully repelling Charlton’s attacks and preserving its 2-1 lead until the final whistle.

Men’s
This match was anticipated to be fast-paced and aggressive, reflecting the intensity of previous encounters between the two teams. Both Wyche-proof-Narraport and Boort had full squads available, making fitness and team cohesion crucial factors in determining the outcome. Wycheproof-Narraport generated several opportunities in the first quarter, with shots on goal from Declan Anderson and Marcus Williamson. Despite these attempts, Boort’s defence, led by Finn Poxon, cleared the resulting free hits effectively. However, the Boort forwards struggled to control the ball on the bouncy pitch, limiting their ability to capitalise.
Early in the second quarter, Finn Poxon was temporarily sent off, presenting Declan Anderson with a chance to score via a penalty stroke. Greg Boyd, Boort’s goalkeeper, defended well, keeping the match scoreless. Both teams’ defenders were effective in shutting down attacks, and inaccurate overhead passes failed to create any significant advantage.
The deadlock was broken early in the third quarter when a quick ball into the Demons’ D was flicked over Boort’s goalkeeper by Angus Connolly, securing the first goal of the match. The man-to-man defence employed by both sides stifled their usual style of play, frustrating the forwards and limiting scoring opportunities. Boort was awarded several short corners, but the uneven pitch caused the ball to bounce over the sticks, preventing clean shots on goal.
At the other end, Steve Giorlando received a well-placed pass inside the D and managed to score with a tomahawk shot that trickled between the goalkeeper’s feet, extending Wycheproof-Narraport’s lead. Corey Harrison further solidified their advantage after being awarded a penalty stroke, following a defender’s stick hitting his during a one-on-one with the keeper. Harrison calmly converted, giving the Demons a commanding lead.
Boort was awarded a short corner in the final three minutes of the match. The ball was played out to the top, passed left, and then across to Zac Poxon, who scored Boort’s only goal of the game.
