Bakery closure

After serving the community for more than three generations, Naracoorte’s very popular Morris Bakery has shut its doors after losing about $300,000 in alleged theft. The bakery closed its doors on February 5, leaving the community devastated, with many lamenting the loss of a good old business.

Former Allora butcher wins major award

Justin Wade, who commenced his career at the Allora Butchery, has been awarded the national title of Young Australian Butcher of the Year at the Australian Meat Industries National competition held in Brisbane on Saturday.

Appointment of Craig Emerson as Independent Reviewer of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct: Chalmers

The Albanese Government has appointed Dr  Craig  Emerson to lead the 2023–24 review of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct (the Code) to ensure that the supermarket sector is working as it should. The Food and Grocery code is prescribed under the  Competition and Consumer Act 2010. Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and Metcash are signatories to the Code and are bound by it.

Fruit and vegetable prices need urgent ACCC inquiry

Member for Maranoa, Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Agriculture Minister David Littleproud is calling for an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Inquiry into fruit and vegetables, to make supermarkets pay their fair share. "As families struggle to pay for their food amid a cost-of-living crisis, supermarkets are still making record profits, even though all they are doing is putting fruit and vegetables on the back of a truck and onto the supermarket shelves," Mr Littleproud said.

Punters cheer pub’s revival

More than 400 locals filled the 100-year-old building for free drinks put on by the new owners in November before the doors were closed for a quick refit in time for the summer crowds.

Outdoor dining made permanent

The NSW Government has made exempt development for outdoor dining permanent on private land for cafes, clubs, and restaurants. Venues can continue to operate outdoor dining in locations including private laneways, bowling greens and car parks without planning approval, providing they meet safety rules.
