Steel power pole trial underway in part of Yanchep

Steel power poles are being trialled in part of Yanchep with their installation expected to be completed at the end of October, according to Western Power. This week a Western Power spokeswoman said the trial of steel poles was aimed at increasing network resilience.

From apprentice to owner: Blair Hogan leads Mallee Steel into future

Birchip’s long-running steel fabrication business, Mallee Steel, has entered a new chapter, with former apprentice Blair Hogan taking over the business from inaugural and long-serving owner Robert "Cozo" Cozens. Blair said, "Customers won’t notice any major changes to how Mallee Steel operates. It’s still Mallee Steel, running the same as always; same name, same quality work".

Steelworks administration benefiting community

Mayor Phill Stone and Whyalla City Council CEO Justin Commons met with steelworks and mining administrators KordaMentha at this week’s OneWhyalla community meeting, receiving an update on the administration process and the flow-on benefits it’s providing for the local community.

Statement on the United States tariffs on Australia: NFF

David Jochinke. The National Farmers' Federation notes reports that Australian steel and aluminium exports to the United States will be subject to a 25 per cent tariff. The NFF supports a considered and measured approach being taken as officials work through this and any future developments.

Australia must act now if it is to seize the opportunity to play a significant role in decarbonising domestic and global steel production and utilise the nation’s significant international comparative advantage to create a competitive Green Iron industry, Magnetite Mines has asserted in the company’s submission to the Australian Government’s Green Metals Consultation Paper.  

Bhullar Group’s new facility promises job growth in Narrandera

Despite a few setbacks, the Bhullar Group is set to officially resume their business in Narrandera next month, promising more job opportunities for the town. The group, which specialises in metals and steel, welded beams, pre-fabricated steel and steel processing, also delivers highly skilled labour to the Australian industry through the Bhullar Industrial Training Division.

James Phelps Memorial and replica plough: history for all to see

Both plough and monument were first unveiled for the Centenary of Birchip in 1982 and it is wonderful to see them back where they belong, this time, together ... Joe keeps blacksmithing alive

A teenager was ensuring the blacksmithing trade was front and centre for the millennial generation at the Good Old Days Festival in southern NSW. Joe Reedy, of Wallabadah in northern NSW, donned his leather apron and was kept busy working the hot forge and hammering out draught horseshoes and fire pokers for an appreciative audience at the festival at Barellan on October 1-2.

BHP signs Letter of Intent for Australia-East Asia iron ore Green Corridor

A consortium, led by the Global Maritime Forum and consisting of BHP, Rio Tinto, Oldendorff Carriers and Star Bulk Carriers Corp., have today signed a letter of intent (LOI) to assess the development of an iron ore Green Corridor between Australia and East Asia.
