Indigenous artwork commissioned for trail

Local Whyalla resident and proud Barngarla woman Jody Croft was recently commissioned by Whyalla City Council to create four original artworks to fit the newly designed First Nation Trail from Douglas Point North to Fitzgerald Bay.

The Battle of Magdhaba

Warwick O'Neill. “Take that damned thing away and let me see it for the first time in half an hour.” The immortal words of General Charlie Cox of the 1st Light Horse Brigade in the mid-afternoon of 23rd December 1916. He was  referring to a direct written order from the Commander of the Anzac Mounted Division, none other than Harry Chauvel, ordering the withdrawal of troops from the attack on Magdhaba, Egypt. The Corps had been attacking all day without success and Chauvel, fearing that horses and men would soon run out of water had ordered the withdrawal. ‘Fighting’ General Cox had other ideas.

Homelessness – making everyone count

Emma Pritchard. Momentum Collective, Social Futures and students from Grafton TAFE hosted an art installation at Market Square in Grafton on August 5 to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness in the local community. As they gathered alongside one another in a show of strength and unity, they proudly held up their signs and engaged with members of the public who walked by.

Creating art and ice cream out of Rappville’s bushfire

Rappville ice cream and a special tablecloth are part of a recovery project in response to the 2019 bushfires. Leading the Creative Recovery Project are artists Charlotte Haywood and Lyndall Phelps who have spent time in Rappville this year working with the community as part of the Arts Northern Rivers initiative.

Hidden creatures of the Barossa – can you find them all?

The community can discover mythical hidden creatures across local venues during the Barossa instalment of SALA (South Australian Living Artists Festival), a celebration of South Australian visual art. In partnership with Barossa Regional Gallery, Nuriootpa High School Visual Art students have spent months creating the sculptures for public display at participating businesses.

Running Up a Dress

Lismore Theatre Company is pleased to announce its next show, Running Up a Dress will be on stage September 10-19. Written in 1986, Running up a Dress, is a play about mothers and daughters, a relationship that shapes young women. The play, written by Suzanne Spunner, originally intended to be performed by two actors, will feature an ensemble cast.

Orchestra highlight for Tennant kids

The gladrags were dusted off on Saturday night for Oz Opera’s performance of Bizet’s Carmen at the Civic Hall. Five local children had the amazing opportunity to take part in the event, performing two songs in French and impressing everyone with their acting abilities.

The trick to becoming an author

Former Naracoorte High scholar Linda Cawley (nee Stanford) has written a children’s book called The Trick with Sticks. It is cleverly written in a Dr. Seuss style to help children and their parents with their child’s friendships. We all know how friendships can be tricky, so the book explores the bonds of friendship and how those bonds are formed.

More than half of all those transported to Van Diemen's Land as convicts would one day settle or spend time in Victoria.

New release – Comprehensive history of Northern Snowy Mountains

Dr David Lindley’s long anticipated history of the Northern Snowy Mountains was launched by the Mayor of Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council, Abb McAlister on 24 June to a packed crowd at Gundagai Library. The book is in two volumes, with Volume 1 covering the exploration of the mountains from Long Plain to Goobarragandra with a comprehensive description of the many gold mines and gold mining ventures in the region. Volume 2 examines grazing, timber-milling, eucalyptus oil distillation, fishing and other recreational activities.
