Two iconic Outback Queensland towns are celebrating after being named in Australian Traveller’s 100 Best Towns To Travel To.

Longreach in the heart of Outback Queensland was recognised for its iconic tourism attractions including the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Qantas Founders Museum other experiences that brought the Outback’s history to life.

Judge and TV personality, Catriona Rowntree advised Longreach was popular amongst the judges due to its diversity of “big deal” tourist attractions. 

Winton was acknowledged for its unique cultural experiences, thriving events calendar and an atmosphere that was “straight out of central casting” for an Outback town.

Outback Queensland Tourism Association CEO Denise Brown said the accolade was a huge win for both towns and demonstrated the growing appetite amongst Australian travellers for authentic Outback experiences.

“This acknowledgement from Australian Traveller reinforces what locals and visitors have known for years — Outback Queensland is home to some of the most memorable and character-filled destinations in the country,” she said.

“Winton and Longreach offer experiences you simply cannot find anywhere else in Australia.

“From dinosaur discoveries and dark sky gazing to celebrating the rich history of Australia’s pioneering past, both Winton and Longreach are must-do experiences for travellers.”

Denise advised the recognition also highlights the important role tourism plays in supporting regional communities and local businesses across western Queensland.

Said Denise, “The visitor economy is just so important to our towns in Outback Queensland, and our operators are open for business and ready to welcome visitors with open arms.

“With global travel conditions remaining volatile, now is a great time for Australians to perhaps rethink their overseas holiday plans and explore their own backyard.

“There will never be a better time than now to explore Outback Queensland. The weather is fabulous; the scenery is stunning and our Outback towns have ample petrol supply.”
