Sparkling moment as new Assistant Bishop consecrated

Recent stories

Reflecting on her recent consecration as the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Grafton, the Right Reverand Tiffany Sparks said while her heart is bursting with joy, she feels incredibly humbled and blessed to work within the ministry while sharing inspiring and uplifting messages of love, friendship and faith, with communities within the Diocese of Grafton, which stretches between the state border and Port Macquarie.

At 44, she is the youngest Assistant Bishop to be consecrated in Australia, and only the 14th woman amongst 350 in the clergy to be consecrated since the Anglican Church was established in the country almost 240 years ago.

Originally from the Riverina region, the Right Reverand Sparks has served as Diocesan Archdeacon and Ministry Development Officer since 2019, and after previously fulfilling the role of Rector at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Ashgrove, Brisbane, she could not resist the opportunity to work in what she describes as the “wonderfully diverse Clarence Valley.”

Speaking with the Clarence Valley Independent last week, the Right Reverand Sparks revealed that while she still feels overwhelmed following her consecration on March 12, and “cannot believe it has happened”, she is hopeful her elevation to her new role will encourage more women to seek employment opportunities within the Ministry.

“Along with making this position a part of who I am as I move forward, I want to use my voice to advocate for gender equality,” she said.

“I love the Clarence Valley, and I feel so lucky to be here.

“I’ve always had an interest in people and culture, and how we work together and creative good group dynamics.

“As the Assistant Bishop, I will continue to advocate for communities within the Diocese of Grafton, and will I retain my duties from my previous roles.”

The Right Reverand Sparks will continue to perform episcopal duties including confirmations and ordinations at the request of the Bishop of Grafton Dr Murray Harvey, who said he has every confidence in her ability to undertake her work with great care, Godly wisdom, and grace, adding her consecration will greatly enhance the Ministry and mission of the Diocese of Grafton.

The Right Reverand Sparks is excited to welcome more people into the Anglican Church and said she is also looking forward to travelling to different parishes within the Diocese of Grafton to meet and speak with community members.
