The Nhill community came together in strong numbers to commemorate ANZAC Day, with around 300 people attending the Dawn Service and approximately 200 at the 11am service.
The Dawn Service began with a reflection on the Gallipoli campaign and the spirit of the ANZACs, delivered by Nhill RSL President John Dunbar. Secretary Rhys Webb then spoke about Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, known as the “Scarlet Pimpernel” of the Vatican for his efforts during World War II. Mr Webb also recited the poignant poem In Flanders Fields, while Mr Dunbar led the recitation of the Ode. Lucy Blackwood played the Last Post and Reveille, and the Australian National Anthem was performed by the Nhill Dimboola Band.
The 11am service commenced with a march and wreath laying ceremony, conducted by Mr Webb. A poem titled We are Australian by Banjo Paterson was recited during the proceedings.
The march concluded at the Nhill Memorial Centre, where Hindmarsh Shire Mayor Ron Ismay welcomed those gathered. Three hymns were performed by the Nhill Dimboola Band, followed by an address from guest speaker Wayne Batson, who shared his reflections on the meaning of ANZAC Day and his experiences serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The ANZAC Requiem was read by Nhill College Captains Bailee White and Chloe Zanker. Wiremu (Lems) Larkins led the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem before the service concluded with everyone joining in the Australian National Anthem.
Secretary Rhys Webb thanked the Nhill community for their ongoing support, announcing that over $1600 was raised this year through the ANZAC Appeal.
“Lest we forget,” he said.
