On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October the Windmill Stitchers of Kaniva held their 11th Biennial Exhibition in the Kaniva Shire Hall commencing at 10am both days. The Stitchers first held an exhibition 20 years ago in 2004.
Over the two days of the exhibition, people came from all over the district, surrounding towns and further afield, along with several travellers, to admire the beautiful quilts on display; many wonderful comments were overheard about the wonderful Cameo Ceiling in the hall!
There were fifty quilts on display which have been made by members of the group. There were also 54 Charity quilts on display which will be delivered to the SA Quilters and Flinders Kids in Adelaide very soon.
All Charity quilts are made by the members as well as some generous people from other areas. Fabric for these quilts has been donated and funds raised are used to purchase wadding and backing fabric to complete the quilts. There were five ‘Fabric Challenge Block’ quilts also displayed, three from the 2021/22 challenge and two from the 2023/2024 Challenge.
This year there were four traders’ stalls, Arts on Ormerod, Naracoorte, Cornerstone Creations from Bordertown, Mallee Magic from Rainbow and Jack n’ Jayde from Rostrevor. All reported a good response from those who visited and purchased. Two of the traders had expressed their satisfaction in their accommodations and the eateries they dined at on the two days and nights they stayed in Kaniva.
The raffle this year was won by Bev Davis, a beautiful quilt made by Sherrel Meyer, and 2nd prize was a handmade project bag full of sewing goodies and was won by Chris Heenan of Edenhope. The bag was made by Cindy McDonald with the sewing goodies donated by members. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Kaniva Ambulance Service.
Winner of the Viewer’s Choice went to Sherrel Meyer with ‘Mosaic Courtyard’, closely followed by Jenny Wallis with ‘Curious by Nature’
The ladies had a busy time in the kitchen catering for a light luncheon which was well received.
The Windmill Stitchers thank all those who attended whether they travelled a distance or just around the corner. We also thank those who left a comment in our Visitors Book and we extend special thanks to the young men who assisted with the setting up of the stands on Friday morning. Your help was appreciated.
We look forward to our next exhibition in 2026. Anyone wishing to join us can contact Jenny Wallis 0428 931310 for more details.
