The Perth Royal Show saw a return to a full program this year after COVID caused a massive reduction in classes offered in 2022.
Entries across the hack section were of excellent quality, reflecting a return to business as usual after the disruption caused by the pandemic.
Breed ring entries varied, with some breeds quite low and others with good numbers.
This year’s supreme led breed exhibit of the show went to the Pinto, Sunset Stars and Fireworks owned by Janine Buckless. A part-Welsh, this win follows another supreme earlier in the year at the Welsh foal show.
The Simmons family’s Aryline Australian Pony Stud was probably the show’s busiest and most successful exhibitor.
The stud’s progeny are classic in type with beautiful heads and they presented eight ponies over the course of the show in both show horse and breed classes.
Aryline Platinum Edition was sashed supreme Australian Pony and was the winner of the Barrymoor McDonnel award. Aryline Denim N Lace was declared the overall non-stud book champion exhibit for the second year in a row.
In the Welsh sections, Joanne Johnson’s Riegal Wonderland was supreme part-Welsh, with the ridden championship going to Bronte Adams and Kolbeach Rendition.
Lauren King’s Kings Town Im’a Prince was supreme Welsh Cob as well as taking out the ridden championship. Catherine Anderson’s London Park Lion Heart supreme Welsh of cob type and Sue Shingleton’s Penley Princess Royal supreme Welsh pony. The Welsh Mountain Pony supreme was Glamorvid Everton.
London Park Lion Heart won the Emlyn Award for the supreme champion Welsh exhibit.
Joanne Johnson’s Riding Pony filly Riegal Wonderland was supreme champion led Riding Pony and Bronte and Kolbeach Rendition took another ridden champion sash.
Trudy West made a return to the show ring after a long absence on her over height Riding Pony Westgrove Riverdance, eventually taking out supreme ridden.
Another rider returning after a break was Jaqueline Prentice, who has recently had her second baby. She rode Sara Naylor’s SN Arcadia to success in the Leslie Jones Memorial Thoroughbred trophy.
The Clydesdale section was strong and the winner of three-year-old colt class Prominence Park Love And Thunder shown by Susan Bager went through to be named supreme exhibit and also best WA-bred.
The supreme Gypsy Cob was JG Gypsys’ Watermark Honey Bun, while the top part-bred sash went to Nicola Wixon’s Windal Park Keep The Beat.
In the Connemara section, Capparis O’Grady shown by Cassie Erceg was supreme exhibit and in a good showing of Shetlands, Janine Doombusch’s senior mare Ti Tree Park Strange Magic was supreme.
The supreme led Thoroughbred was Louise Fraser’s Reveuse, with the champion ridden sash going to Kym Brajkovich and Radiant Smile. Reveuse also won the “Admiral’s Christmas” award for supreme led off-the-track exhibit.
Kristie Morrone showed AP Supremacy to take the supreme led Standardbred class, while Kara Stokes’ Must Be Nice was champion ridden.
In the saddle classes, Allambah Sugar Pop shown by Morgan Lane was champion small saddle pony and Yartarla Park Chantilly Lace, Holly Mahoney, won the large pony sash.
Cimeron King Of Pop was champion galloway for Eliza Grace Crossing, and Double TT De-Vita was champion hack for Josephine Indrizzi.
In the show hunter classes, Nicole Dvorak’s Mallawa Park Hashtag was the small pony champion and the big pony sash went to Whitmere Benjamin Button shown by Rachel Langley.
Robyn and Courtney Vale’s Karma Park Fire Fox was champion show hunter galloway and the champion show hunter hack was CPE Quartet shown by Lily Hennessy.
The champion novice show hunter was Olivia Smith’s Broadwater Park Remembrance.
In the riding classes, Sophie Vince was champion senior rider, Lily Hennessy champion intermediate and Honey Towers-Hammond the junior champion.
Honey, riding Yartarla Park Kandinsky, also won the junior smartest on parade.
Always a delight to watch the leading rein pony smartest on parade was won by Nicole Dvorak with her son Milan aboard Mallawa Park Hashtag.
Milan also won his rider class and Mallawa Park Hashtag won the open leading rein hunter pony 12 hands and under.
The show pony leading rein winner was Trudy West’s HP Love Affair.
There was quality showjumping right through the show.
Leon Carroll’s YPH Picasso, current showjumper of the year, won the Grand Prix class and Rick Dabner riding the bay stallion Afrodiziak E who took home the Countryman Memorial Cup.
The off-the-track (OTT) movement is strong in Western Australia and Charlee Morton-Sharp took first and second place in the OTT high point award with Supermaxi and Impazzire. Impazzire had his second win for the show in the six bar class.
Kareenyas Gypsy Belle ridden by Saachi Travers won the Jumping WA Young Rider Series and Bridget Kelly won the Susan Bond Memorial Mini Prix on Cornets Prinzess.
The winner of the WA amateur series was Casey Gill riding Lakeside Cadence and Layla Diamantis riding Barrabadeen Halifax was the leading junior rider.
The champion showjumping horse for the show was Barrabadeen Centre Stage ridden by Breanna Pottinger who was also the champion showjumping rider under 21.
