Hotly contested Copper Coast Cup

Recent stories

More than 500 cyclists competed in the Copper Coast Cycling Cup on Saturday and Sunday, October 7-8.

Australian Cycling Team won the Elite Men category while Cervelo Ziptrak triumphed in the Elite Women and Villawood in the Category 1 Men.

Further results from the Wallaroo Road Race and Moonta Criterium are being finalised by AusCycling.

Copper Coast Council tourism and events officer Chloe Barrett said the cup made for a fantastic weekend.

“In spite of a few event issues, the riders had an enjoyable experience across both days,” Barrett said.

“AusCycling did a fantastic job running these events and a huge thank you should go out to all local volunteers, community groups and businesses which supported the event.

“The many racers, race organisers, commissaires, their supporters and family members all stayed and boosted the Copper Coast economy.” Mayor Roslyn Talbot said the event created a festive atmosphere thanks to quality cycling, food vans and local eateries offering great food and the magnificent weather across the weekend.

“The men’s elite race (in the Moonta Criterium) was very tactical with many lead changes and exciting to watch with a sprint to the finish line,” Talbot said.

“Many (Wallaroo Road Race competitors) enjoyed the challenge of dirt roads and some would prefer to stay on bitumen and found it too much of a challenge.

“The Copper Coast Cup is an opportunity for riders to race outside of the city and enjoy some country hospitality without having to travel too far.

“We have some very talented athletes come to this event and it is a great opportunity for us to see them compete.”
