City of Greater Geraldton, Media Release, 23 January 2023

Giving the gift of variety all while supporting local has come out on top over the festive season with thousands of dollars being injected into the community thanks to the Buy Local Greater Geraldton Gift Cards.

Reaching impressive new heights, nearly 900 Gift Cards were purchased in the month of December last year, totalling over $107,000 for the month alone.

Since the program’s inception in 2021, nearly $350,000 has been injected into the local economy, continuing to support businesses growth.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was thrilled to see the cards continue to go from strength to strength.

“It’s amazing to see how much our community have embraced the program, and it’s great to see the Gift Cards were front of mind over the festive season,” he said.

“All this money which may have been spent elsewhere, has now stayed local which we know has huge flow on effects to our local community and economy.

“None of this would have been possible without the ongoing and amazing support from all the local businesses involved in the program, as well as our partners.”

With hundreds of Buy Local Greater Geraldton Gift Cards purchased for Christmas gifts, locals are reminded to redeem the gift cards at the long list of local participating businesses.

“If you received a Buy Local Gift Card for Christmas, this is your reminder to help kickstart our local businesses’ New Year by going in store and spending them,” Mayor Van Styn added.

“You’ll have no shortage of options with over 80 local businesses part of the program.

“We thank all the amazing businesses involved, and also our larger employers such as Mid West Ports who have helped boost the program by purchasing Gift Cards in bulk.”
